News.com.au reported on December 28 that a bikini model could face up to a year in prison after being arrested for walking her dog topless at a popular beach in Brazil.
Model Caroline Werner has criticised "double standards" after being arrested for going nude above the waist, and expressed frustration at the country's "patriarchal, violent culture" that would not allow her to go topless because she was a woman.
She wondered why she got into trouble, but shirtless men didn't.
The 37-year-old model and business owner said she was "brutally assaulted" by police and chained to the bars of her cell after being arrested for walking topless in Balneario Camboriu, a resort town in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.
"Unfortunately in my country, although the constitution guarantees gender equality, in reality this does not happen. What should be natural for both sexes is arbitrarily and oppressively denied to one side," she said indignantly.

Ms Werner explained that she decided to take her shirt off while walking her dog on her way home after a day at the beach. She was approached by several police officers, arrested, and taken to the police station, where she was given a shirt to cover her chest.
The model also claims that law enforcement violated her due process rights by not allowing her to call any friends or lawyers.
Ms Werner said that in all her travels around the world she had never encountered any problems with being topless in public and was shocked to be detained for this behaviour in Brazil.
"In many countries, this is completely normal. Women's bodies are not objectified and over-sexualized," the model said. She received a summons for obscene conduct and was released.
According to G1 , Article 233 of Brazil's Criminal Code refers to "obscene acts in a public place, publicly or exposed to the public," but does not define what "obscene acts" are. The bikini model now faces a sentence of 3 months to 1 year in prison if convicted.
