Japan supports Vietnam to improve gender equality in mountainous schools

Recently, in Hanoi, the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam held a signing ceremony of a non-refundable aid contract for a joint project with the non-governmental organization Plan International Japan. The project is called "Improving the learning environment from a gender equality perspective in primary and secondary schools in Ha Giang and Lai Chau provinces".

The project includes the construction and renovation of dormitories and the installation of sanitary facilities at 26 schools in Meo Vac and Yen Minh districts ( Ha Giang province) and Sin Ho district (Lai Chau province).

The project also aims to reach and share knowledge with approximately 10,000 students and teachers, 3,680 parents, and about 100 local officials. A key feature of the project is its encouragement of active student participation, especially from ethnic minority groups, in learning activities, communication, and policy recommendations. Children will not only be beneficiaries but also active creators of a better learning environment, contributing to the promotion of comprehensive sex education in the locality.

The total estimated project cost is over 250 million Japanese yen (approximately 42.4 billion VND), and it is expected to be implemented over 3 years, from 2025 to 2028.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Ito Naoki shared: "I feel this project is very meaningful because it can improve the problems faced by students in primary and junior high schools in mountainous areas, such as inadequate school facilities and dormitories, while also providing opportunities to access knowledge about gender equality and reproductive health. I hope that this project will be implemented effectively and be recognized as a successful model project in the field of education."

The Japanese ambassador emphasized that, in Japan's development cooperation policy with Vietnam, besides supporting infrastructure development to promote economic growth and training human resources to strengthen governance, Japan also focuses on the fields of health and education to support poverty reduction and narrow the gap for vulnerable groups in society.

Since 2002, the Japanese government has implemented 97 grant-based cooperation projects linking non-governmental organizations in Vietnam, with a total aid amount of approximately 2.45 billion yen.
