On April 16, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases informed that the hospital's doctors had just received and treated a female patient, NTT (53 years old, in Ha Nam ), suffering from a rare parasite.

The patient came to the clinic with persistent eye pain, a feeling of foreign body, constant tearing and tingling. Previously, the patient had used eye drops at home but saw no improvement.

At the hospital, during a thorough examination and testing with specialized equipment, doctors discovered a parasite in the patient’s eye. Immediately after the discovery, the parasite was safely removed under sterile conditions.

The specimen is currently being analyzed at the parasitology laboratory for identification and further analysis.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen - Center for Medical Examination and Treatment on Demand and International said that if not detected and treated promptly, parasites can cause prolonged infection, corneal damage, impaired vision, and even blindness.

According to Dr. Huyen, the above patient case warns that parasites do not only cause diseases in the digestive tract as many people think. In fact, they can invade important organs such as the eyes, brain, lungs, liver, or heart and cause serious complications if not detected early. More worryingly, parasites can exist silently in the body for months, even years without showing obvious symptoms.

Some initial symptoms of people infected with parasites such as unexplained prolonged abdominal pain, digestive disorders, recurring allergies, itchy rashes all over the body, rapid weight loss or unusual eye symptoms such as redness, itching, frequent watering can be easily overlooked.

Doctors warn that the source of parasitic infection often originates from unsafe eating and living habits such as eating rare meat, blood pudding, raw vegetables that are not washed thoroughly, drinking raw water or not regularly deworming. In addition, polluted living environments and unsanitary water sources also contribute to increasing the risk of disease in the community. Therefore, people need to raise awareness of disease prevention.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen recommends that to prevent diseases caused by parasites, people need to maintain personal hygiene, deworm every 6 months, eat cooked food and drink boiled water, wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet, and maintain clean water sources and a healthy living environment./.
