At the hospital, the results of the aspiration cytology showed a benign colloid goiter. However, on the MRI and bronchoscopy images, the two thyroid lobes were very large, 15cm on each side, with the thyroid hanging down into the mediastinum, making it difficult to access, compressing and narrowing the trachea by 70%. The patient was indicated for surgery.
The doctors held an interdisciplinary consultation, agreed and prescribed the removal of the patient's entire giant bilobed thyroid tumor.
After 2 hours of surgery, the surgical team led by Dr. Nguyen Quang Phu - Head of Thoracic Neurosurgery Department successfully removed a 1 kg tumor measuring 9x14 cm.

This is considered a highly difficult surgery because it affects many other parts such as the trachea, larynx, blood vessels, and nerves in the neck area... Therefore, the surgeon must have high technical skills, rich experience, and meticulousness to safely remove the tumor for the patient.
Currently, the patient is awake, in stable health and was discharged from the hospital 7 days after surgery.
Doctors said that giant goiter is a rare disease, large tumors affect aesthetics and quality of life such as causing difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, hand tremors, hoarseness... Surgery for giant goiter has many potential risks and complications.
Therefore, doctors recommend that patients with multinodular goiters or large goiters should go to medical facilities for examination and early surgical treatment.
