We met Mr. Tien and some project volunteers at a meeting at a coffee shop on Ngo Gia Tu Street (Nha Trang Ward) on a Sunday afternoon at the end of September. Nearly 20 elderly people, most of whom were retired officials, chatted together in simple English, under the enthusiastic guidance of Mr. Tien and the volunteers. The atmosphere of the meeting was lively and attracted everyone to participate in many activities. Ms. Duong Minh Thanh (57 years old, Bac Nha Trang Ward) shared: "We feel very comfortable, not afraid of making mistakes, not shy. Thanks to the volunteers and especially Mr. Tien, I am bold enough to communicate in English and feel young again."

Having been involved in the project “ Khanh Hoa people speak English” since August 2024 as a judge of an English contest, Mr. Tien was quickly attracted by the project’s profound humanistic meaning. After more than a year of working with it, Mr. Tien has experienced a range of emotions, from the initial confusion to seeing the project spread more and more strongly. He shared: “This is one of the first community projects in Vietnam focusing on equipping English skills for a variety of subjects, from students, traders, taxi drivers, hotel staff to retired officials, helping local people access English in a close way and apply it in life. That is both a challenge and a motivation for me to devote myself.”

For him, each class and each project activity is not only a place to convey and share knowledge to people, but also a space for himself to experience. In particular, he always tries to make learners feel that learning is fun, not pressure. Although learners are busy, there are many barriers in terms of level, age, time, etc., but thanks to the flexible organization and closeness of Mr. Tien and the volunteers, many people still persevere in attending the lessons and regular English exchange sessions.

Inspiration for volunteers

Not only accompanying the learners, Mr. Doan Van Tien is also the person behind the coordination, professional support, inspiration and keeping the fire burning for the team of hundreds of volunteers of the project who are English teachers, foreign language students, high school students who are good at English. In the role of leader, Mr. Tien takes on a series of tasks such as: Building the curriculum, organizing exchange activities, creating exam questions and being a judge for English competitions (such as: Golden Bell, English Arena, Master English Master Your Life, Dai Hai Trinh, Sing to Shine...). He also always shares, encourages and helps volunteers overcome difficulties and keep the fire burning for dedication. Ms. Vo Thi Huyen Trang, a volunteer of the project, said: “Mr. Tien always accompanies and closely supports volunteer teachers. He often listens to difficulties in lesson planning, teaching methods or classroom management, and at the same time provides timely and effective solutions for volunteers. Not only that, Mr. Tien also creates conditions for teachers to access many sources of documents, organizes experience sharing, and creates a harmonious and friendly working environment. With his enthusiasm, dedication and flexibility, Mr. Tien has given teachers a strong motivation to feel more secure and confident.”

In addition, Mr. Tien is also in charge of the project's ambassador network, which includes about 150 young people who were champions of the project's English competitions. Growing up from the project, these "seeds" continue to return to contribute to the project, participate in local events, and promote the image of Khanh Hoa to the people and international visitors. Mr. Tien is the bridge connecting the generation of students with the next generation, creating a cycle of sharing and development.

The project “Khanh Hoa people speak English” is not only an educational program, but also a journey to inspire and connect the community. In that journey, Mr. Doan Van Tien is one of the typical faces, a tireless instigator. With a love for the profession and a spirit of unceasing dedication, Mr. Tien and volunteers are quietly creating a change in the thinking of learning and using foreign languages of Khanh Hoa people - a small but sustainable step forward on the path of integration and development.
