Cultural industry (CNVH) is not only a potential field contributing to national GDP, but also a soft strategy to position the image and cultural identity of Vietnam on the world map.
Identity - the fulcrum of creativity
The story of the Bamboo Circus program "Ah, oh, show" is a typical example. This is the program that was awarded the first prize of the 2nd Ho Chi Minh City Creative Award at the end of 2021, affirming the effectiveness of the creative Vietnamese identity art model. In this program, the investor did not hesitate to spend money to format a unique product and achieve artistic and revenue achievements.
People's Artist Le Tien Tho - former Chairman of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association - emphasized that in any product of cultural industry, the core is identity - a foundation for the world to recognize who we are and cultural products aiming at cultural industry must be guaranteed by creativity based on the soul of Vietnamese identity.
With about 70 million internet users and personal social media accounts, Vietnam has a great opportunity to bring cultural values into life, everyone can be creative. Dr. Nguyen The Ky, former Chairman of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts, said that the biggest challenge today is the lack of creative forces with high expertise, deep understanding of national culture and international integration skills. "We have many people doing art but lack professional cultural producers, people who can turn ideas into qualified products to step out into the world," he said.
Things to do now
Director Tran Huu Tan believes that currently the human resources for the film industry are relatively sufficient, but for large projects that require high expertise, foreign experts are still needed. Filmmaking is not enough if only studying in school, it requires a lot of practice and practice while learning, continuously supplementing knowledge.
According to director andeducator Kathy Uyen, human resources for the development of the cultural industry in general and cinema in particular need cooperation between film education institutes and content production companies to find new talents. The current focus of training film human resources is still technical, lacking the development of creative thinking, personal emotions and the individual identity of the artist. This needs to be improved to contribute to creating talented human resources.
"To improve the quality of human resource training for the film industry, there needs to be a common policy from the management agency. When schools see the interest and importance of industry training through policies, they will boldly invest to ensure quality output. Many Vietnamese cinema works in recent times, regardless of genre, have strong indigenous cultural features. To help spread Vietnamese cultural identity, there needs to be attention from the state through encouragement, motivation, and creating a trend of bringing culture into creative products," said director and educator Kathy Uyen.

Similarly, screenwriter Thanh Huong believes that there is no shortage of human resources in the film industry today, but there is a shortage of specialized personnel in each stage. "The solution to this problem is that teaching schools need to select teachers with expertise and practical skills. Teaching curricula need to be updated, balancing theory and practice," screenwriter Thanh Huong suggested.
Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Bich Ha said that in the world, the development of cultural industry is taking place strongly, is a trend and gradually becomes an important driving force to promote the socio -economic development of countries. Vietnam is assessed to have many potentials and advantages for the development of cultural industry. To promote the development of cultural industry, it is necessary to focus on accelerating the application process, exploiting scientific and technological achievements, and creative capacity to create products and services with cultural and economic values.
Currently, many universities in Ho Chi Minh City have trained creative human resources for the music and cultural industry such as Van Hien, Van Lang, Nguyen Tat Thanh universities, etc. However, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem, despite efforts in training human resources for the music and cultural industry, there are still many shortcomings. "In recent years, along with the socio-economic development, the force participating in the cultural and artistic creation process has increasingly matured and grown, contributing many creative ideas to create diverse, rich and unique cultural and artistic products and activities. However, compared to practical requirements and demands, human resources have not yet met expectations and set goals," Associate Professor My Liem confided.
Cultural brand imprint from the press
Director Ly Hai - who has earned over 100 billion VND in revenue from the "Flip Side" films he wrote and directed - analyzed: "Artists cannot operate in a single environment. They need investors, art managers, distribution systems, media... all working towards the goal of developing a competitive cultural industry."
Director Le Quy Duong said he is interested in promoting digitalization and exporting content. "Building a specialized digital platform for Vietnamese cultural products (music, cinema, design, games, traditional arts, etc.) and expanding to the ASEAN, East Asia, and European markets is an inevitable trend today. In addition, it is necessary to support artists and cultural startups to access international digital platforms such as Netflix, Spotify, Steam, Webtoon, and YouTube Premium. If we do not do it right away, we will be late and fall behind," said Mr. Le Quy Duong.
One of the typical examples of the effort to connect popular art and culture is the Mai Vang Award organized by the Lao Dong Newspaper. Not only is it an award to honor artists, Mai Vang has gradually become a prestigious cultural institution, contributing to orienting the public's enjoyment of art, while promoting creativity in a professional direction. Mai Vang is not only an award but also a 30-year journey of building trust, taste and cultural brand in the heart of the creative urban area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. To Dinh Tuan - Editor-in-Chief of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper - affirmed: "The Mai Vang Award is not only a playground for artists, but also a part of the cultural industry ecosystem. The press can absolutely become a factor promoting the development of cultural industry by discovering, honoring, and connecting artists with audiences".
Reflecting a diverse society with many perspectives will help viewers better understand indigenous culture.
