According to Dr Silky Jain, Paediatric Oncologist and BMT, Jaypee Hospital, India, anemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, resulting in reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
What causes anemia in men?
Nutritional Deficiency
“The most common cause is a lack of iron, which is essential for the production of hemoglobin. Poor nutrition or chronic blood loss can lead to iron deficiency,” says Dr. Jain.
Additionally, deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate can also cause anemia in men. These vitamins are important for red blood cell production. Deficiencies can be due to poor diet, absorption problems, or certain medical conditions.
Chronic disease
Chronic kidney disease: According to information from a study by the University of Michigan, USA, the kidneys produce erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. Kidney disease can impair this process, leading to anemia.
Inflammatory diseases: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease can cause chronic anemia, in which inflammation affects the production and lifespan of red blood cells.
Genetic disorders
Autoimmune disorders and genetic diseases can also cause anemia in men, says Dr. Jain.
Thalassemia: This inherited blood disorder affects hemoglobin production, leading to varying degrees of anemia.
Sickle cell disease: This disease causes red blood cells to become deformed and break down prematurely, leading to chronic anemia.
Blood loss
Blood loss is a major factor in causing anemia in men, says Dr. Jain. It can occur due to trauma or a bleeding disorder.
Gastrointestinal bleeding: Ulcers in the digestive tract can cause chronic or acute blood loss.
Trauma or surgery: Significant blood loss from trauma or surgery can lead to anemia if not treated promptly.
