To secure a place at university, candidates need to pay attention to important principles when registering their preferences.
This information was shared during an online television consultation program titled "Important Notes When Registering for University Admissions" organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of July 18th. The program was streamed live at: thanhnien.vn , Facebook Fanpage, YouTube channel, and TikTok of Thanh Nien Newspaper.
5 STEPS TO REGISTER YOUR PREFERENCES
Sharing his insights on the program, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Rector of Duy Tan University, stated that the next two weeks are crucial for candidates participating in this year's university admissions process. Accordingly, regardless of whether they meet the early admission criteria or not, candidates need to complete all registration steps on the Ministry of Education and Training's system.
According to Dr. Hai, this registration process consists of five steps: Accessing the system and logging in with a personal account and changing the personal password on the first login; registering admission information; proceeding with additional registration and arranging preferences; confirming with an OTP code sent by the system to the registered phone number; and checking the list of preferences before confirming registration. "Candidates can repeat this process multiple times from now until 5 PM on July 30th. After July 30th, candidates need to continue paying the fee and confirming enrollment online before coming to the school to complete the enrollment procedures," Dr. Hai added.
Experts advised candidates on how to apply for suitable university choices during an online program hosted by Thanh Nien Newspaper yesterday afternoon.
According to Dr. Hai, candidates need to fill in all the required information on the software. Two crucial pieces of information that candidates need to carefully check are: the order of their choices and the major code and school code they are registering for. After completing the registration, candidates should log back into the system to double-check the information to ensure there are no problems.
Mr. Cao Quang Tu, Director of Admissions at Saigon International University, also stated that the Ministry's application software has five basic toolbars. Candidates should familiarize themselves with the software from now on. They should use a desktop or laptop computer for registration instead of a mobile phone.
Mr. Ngo Tri Dung, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center at Hong Bang International University, noted that candidates admitted early need to register their preferences on the Ministry's system within the specified time frame.
C. STRATEGY FOR PRIORITIZING APPLICATIONS
Mr. Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of the Student Affairs Department at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, emphasized: "Each candidate, regardless of how many options they register for, will only be admitted to one option, so the strategy of prioritizing their options is extremely important."
Dr. Vo Thanh Hai analyzed: "This year, many universities are implementing early admission methods using criteria other than the high school graduation exam scores. Some talented candidates, when applying early, may receive acceptance letters from multiple universities. When registering on the Ministry of Education and Training's portal, candidates should note that even with an unlimited number of applications, they can only be admitted to one major at one university. Therefore, candidates need to list the majors they wish to apply for, and these choices should be listed in descending order of priority."
According to Dr. Hai, the strategy for placing applications will differ between two groups of candidates. Firstly, candidates who are admitted early and wish to enroll simply need to place that major as their first choice, then pay the fee and confirm. Conversely, some candidates who are admitted early still want to use their high school graduation exam scores for admission and only consider early admission as a backup option. In this case, candidates can prioritize their high school graduation exam scores as a priority before placing their applications for early admission. This method will give candidates more opportunities to be considered based on their high school graduation exam scores while still preserving their early admission status.
Mr. Vu Quang Huy, Deputy Director of the Admissions Counseling Center at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, also said: "Choosing majors should adhere to the principle of selecting a preferred field of study. Some candidates, because they do not meet the admission requirements for a particular major, choose a completely different major in order to study at the same university. This approach should be avoided because candidates will face the consequences of choosing an unsuitable major, such as retaking exams or switching majors…".
Candidates can view their 2024 high school graduation exam results, which were announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on the morning of July 17th.
HOW MANY PREFERENCES SHOULD I REGISTER FOR?
Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training show that in 2023, more than 660,000 candidates registered their preferences on the admissions system (equivalent to 66% of candidates registering for the high school graduation exam), with a total of over 3.4 million registered preferences. This means that on average, each candidate registered 5 preferences.
Mr. Vu Quang Huy suggested that candidates should only register for 3-7 preferences, as this is appropriate. This is because, according to the Ministry's regulations, candidates who are accepted into their first choice will not be considered for subsequent choices.
In this regard, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai also advised: "Candidates should not register for only one major, but they should also not register for too many majors. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, on average, each candidate usually registers for 4-5 majors."
Sharing the same view, Master Cao Quang Tu emphasized: "Candidates should not be overconfident and only list 1-2 options, avoiding the situation where they have very high scores but still fail to get into university."
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Deputy Director of the Admissions Counseling Center at the University of Economics and Finance Ho Chi Minh City, when registering on the Ministry of Education and Training's admissions software, candidates do not need to select the admission method and combination code, but only need to select the school code and major code. However, candidates must still note that they must choose a major code with an admission combination that matches the subject combination they registered for in the high school graduation exam; only then will they have the results to apply for admission on the software.
Regarding the registration process, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai added: "Registering on the first or last day yields the same results. However, registering on the last day may encounter problems if processing is not done in time. Therefore, PhDs should complete the registration process no later than July 29th, and should not wait until July 30th."

When registering for admission, candidates need to pay attention to three very important points: the order of preferences, the major code, and the school code. Candidates should double-check these before clicking the confirm button.

When registering for a major, students must determine it based on their abilities and interests. In particular, they should choose a major they love first, and then choose a school that offers that major.

Should high school graduation exam scores be considered for admission to "hot" majors?
Sharing further information with prospective students, Mr. Vu Quang Huy stated that thoroughly researching and analyzing the minimum admission scores and cut-off scores of the universities they wish to apply to is crucial. For example, this year, some majors at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology have high competition rates, such as multimedia communication, public relations, information technology, automotive engineering technology, and veterinary medicine. These majors are expected to have relatively high admission scores. Prospective students should carefully consider this if applying to these majors using their high school graduation exam scores.
