The White House said on September 20 that the deal for TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, to continue operating in the US would ensure that Americans would have a majority in the new leadership and control over the short video sharing app's algorithm.
Responding to Fox News, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the app's US executive board will have seven seats, six of which belong to Americans.
Ms. Leavitt also confirmed that Oracle - a leading American technology company, is in charge of data and privacy. TikTok's algorithm will also be controlled by the US. The agreement is expected to be signed "in the next few days."
Previously, in a phone call on September 19, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the above agreement.
Mr Trump said the Chinese president had “approved” the deal, while China has not confirmed any agreement.
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, said the US government could receive a fee of up to several billion dollars from investors as part of the deal.
US officials have repeatedly expressed concerns that TikTok could threaten national security, citing allegations that ByteDance - TikTok's parent company in China - has shared US user data with China.
TikTok has repeatedly denied these allegations. Under US President Joe Biden, the US Congress passed a bill forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok's US operations or face a ban.
On September 16, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order postponing the ban on the TikTok platform for the fourth time. Accordingly, this short video sharing application continues to operate in the US until December 16, which is also the deadline for ByteDance to divest from this platform./.
