On September 22, a group of 11 leading economists , including Nobel laureates Joseph Stiglitz and Daron Acemoglu, issued a joint statement warning of the risk of the mainstream media system "collapsing" and calling on governments to help these media outlets survive.

After detailing the problems arising from job losses, declining revenues, and the threat of artificial intelligence (AI) to journalism, economists urged governments to play a greater role in investing in and shaping the media ecosystem.

A group of economists from leading universities in the UK and the US argue that media companies are seeing their traditional advertising sales model, which was used to sustain operations, significantly impacted since the advent of the internet.

Online platforms like Meta and Google account for the majority of online advertising revenue, while new AI chatbots like Google's Chat GPT or Gemini significantly reduce the number of people visiting mainstream media companies' websites to search for information.

Experts conclude that governments need to act to prevent the collapse of mainstream journalism because this would have serious consequences for the economy and society.
