Nvidia has informed its Chinese customers that it is considering expanding the production capacity of its H200 artificial intelligence (AI) chips after orders exceeded current capacity.
Earlier, on December 9, US President Donald Trump announced that the US government would allow Nvidia to export H200 chips to China, while charging a 25% fee on each transaction.
Following the announcement, an Nvidia spokesperson stated: “We are managing our supply chain to ensure that licensed sales of the H200 AI chip to authorized customers in China do not impact our ability to supply customers in the United States.”
Reuters reports that several major Chinese corporations, including Alibaba and ByteDance, have contacted Nvidia this week to inquire about purchasing large quantities of the H200 AI chip.
However, nothing is certain yet, as the Chinese government has not approved any H200 purchases.
According to three informed sources, Chinese officials held an emergency meeting on December 10 to discuss and decide whether to allow the import of this type of chip.
Currently, H200 chip production is very limited, as Nvidia prioritizes the production of more advanced chips, including Blackwell and the upcoming Rubin series. The H200 is the fastest AI chip in Nvidia's Hopper generation. It is highly sought after by Chinese companies because it is the most powerful chip they currently have access to under US law.
The H200's performance is approximately six times higher than that of the H20 – a downgraded version designed by Nvidia specifically for the Chinese market and launched in late 2023.
According to sources, expanding production capacity is not easy for Nvidia, as the company has to switch to the Rubin generation and compete with rivals like Google.
