The Trump administration's decision to allow Nvidia to export its advanced H200 chip to China is facing strong opposition from Democratic senators, who argue that the move undermines U.S. efforts to contain China.
A group of seven Democratic senators sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick on December 12 to express their views.
This group includes Senators Elizabeth Warren, Elissa Slotkin, Chuck Schumer, Tim Kaine, Michael Bennet, Andy Kim, and Ron Wyden.
Senators called the decision "dangerous," abandoning essential security controls and deviating from long-standing bipartisan efforts to ensure American technology does not advance China's military and technological capabilities.
Previously, on December 8th, President Trump informed President Xi Jinping of the decision to allow Nvidia to export H200 chips to China and other countries. President Trump stated that this decision was made under conditions aimed at ensuring robust national security for the United States. In return, Nvidia committed to paying the US government 25% of the revenue from the sale of the H200 chip in the Chinese market.
This decision comes as the US has tightened controls on the export of key technologies.
Since April, Nvidia has been banned from exporting any of its advanced AI chip models to China. In August, President Trump agreed to allow Nvidia to sell the H20 chip – a lower-end version of the H200 designed specifically for China.
In return, Nvidia will share 15% of its sales revenue with the U.S. government.
However, the plan to sell the H20 chip failed because Chinese authorities encouraged customers not to buy that chip./.
