Chinese and East-West writers exchange in Ho Chi Minh City

Writer Dong Tay has won prestigious Chinese literary awards such as the Mao Dun Literature Award and the Lu Xun Literature Award. His works such as Echo, The Slap of Heaven and Dream of a Change of Life have been translated into Vietnamese, becoming one of the windows that helps Vietnamese readers understand more about China.

On the afternoon of June 27, the Chinese Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, and Chi Culture Joint Stock Company (Chibooks) organized the program "The first Vietnam-China literary exchange - Dialogue with Eastern and Western writers".

The event took place on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China (1950-2025), aiming to contribute to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between the people of the two countries, thereby enhancing literary and artistic exchanges between Vietnam and China.

Speaking at the exchange program, Mr. Tu Chau, Deputy Consul General of China in Ho Chi Minh City, said that literary and cultural exchanges between China and Vietnam have a long history.

“From the modern era to the present, Vietnam-China literary exchanges have become increasingly vibrant. Both sides have actively translated and published many of each other’s excellent works. More and more Vietnamese-Chinese literary works have been released and won awards in the other country. In recent years, both sides have actively organized exchanges between writers, translations of works and academic seminars, further promoting Vietnam-China literary exchanges to continue to go into depth,” Mr. Tu Chau added.

According to Mr. Tu Chau, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association has played an important role as a bridge in the exchange of Vietnamese and Chinese literature. In 2022, writer Bich Ngan, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, attended an online discussion on the work “Dream of Change” by writer Dong Tay.

In 2023, the Vietnamese version of “Song Nguy Thuyen” was launched at the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association. Author Ta Lang Khiet attended and shared his thoughts on the writing process. The Vietnamese translation of “Song Nguy Thuyen” was also honored to receive the 2024 Translation Literature Award from the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association.

Speaking at the exchange, writer Bich Ngan, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, shared: This is a very necessary activity, not only to enhance the exchange of literature and art between Vietnam and China, but also to contribute to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between writers and readers of the two countries, especially in an important year celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China like this year.

Writer Dong Tay has won prestigious Chinese literary awards such as the Mao Dun Literature Award and the Lu Xun Literature Award. His works such as Echo, The Slap of Heaven and Dream of a Change of Life have been translated into Vietnamese, becoming one of the windows that helps Vietnamese readers understand more about China.

He once went to Ho Chi Minh City to organize a book signing event for the Vietnamese translation of "Dream of Change" as well as an online exchange with Vietnamese readers about the process of creating and adapting the work into a film, thereby making positive contributions to promoting the friendly exchange of Vietnamese and Chinese literature.

At the program, writer Dong Tay took the time to introduce his personal works, Guangxi literature in particular, and Chinese literature in general. He also answered many questions about his works published in Vietnam, the current writing trends of young Chinese writers; his experience in promoting literary works to the world, etc.

Writer Dong Tay's real name is Dien Dai Lam, born in 1966 in Guangxi, China. He is a famous contemporary Chinese writer and screenwriter, currently Chairman of the Guangxi Provincial Literature and Arts Association, Chairman of the Guangxi Writers Association, member of the Chinese Writers Association and lecturer at Guangxi Nationalities University. He is a delegate to the 14th National People's Congress of China (2023–2028).
