The pickleball tournament "Dan Tri 20 years - Bright new days" took place on July 5 and 6 in Hanoi , gathering 574 athletes participating in 505 matches. The organizers said that all fees collected from athletes (at 500,000 VND/person) will not be used to cover the organization costs but will be used to support the construction of 5 Charity houses, helping 5 households with especially difficult circumstances in Cao Bang.
What happened at the tournament also showed that on the journey to the final match of the Open men's doubles, Dat "tro" and Trieu "cau ban" showed that they were "out of their league" compared to the opponents they faced when they won with a very large score difference.

However, a big surprise happened when the top 1 Vietnamese pair lost heavily to the pair Quoc Khanh - Minh Luan in the final match with a score of 5-15 on July 6. Dan Tri reporter had a conversation with athlete Nguyen Quoc Khanh after this unexpected victory.
First of all, congratulations on winning the Open men's doubles championship, the most difficult and high-level event in the Dan Tri newspaper pickleball tournament. How do you feel after the victory so far?
- Although many days have passed, my teammate Minh Luan and I are still in a state of euphoria after winning the Dan Tri Pickleball Championship. This is the first prestigious championship I have won since I switched from tennis to pickleball.
I have participated in many tournaments but mostly only came in second place. Some people even jokingly said that I am the "king of second place". That is why the championship is a great happiness and very meaningful to me.
Many people think that you and your teammate Minh Luan made a miracle when you were able to defeat the pair Dat "tro" - Trieu "cau ban" in the final match, with a very convincing score of 15-5 even though they are the top 1 pickleball pair in Vietnam in the men's doubles event?
- Actually, this is not the first time my teammates and I have won against Dat "tro" - Trieu "cau ban" but the third time already. However, each of my previous victories was with a different teammate. No matter who I was paired with, the victories against Vietnam's number 1 pair always gave me a great feeling.
To win so big, what secret do you have in exploiting your opponent's weaknesses?
- I think every athlete has strengths and weaknesses. So in each match we need to find our opponent's weaknesses to exploit.
But Dat "tro" - Trieu "cau bong" are a duo that is quite compatible in their playing style, especially when they are very strong in the kitchen area. Minh Luan and I discussed with each other that we will hit many balls towards Dat. The two brothers encouraged each other with each ball. It seems that the opponent also has psychological problems.
My secret in the final was to attack, attack and attack. We were 5-1 up but they equalised to make it 5-5. But with our strong attacking play we surprised them and won 15-5.
It is known that both of you traveled a long distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi to compete, why did you decide to participate in this tournament?
- As professional athletes, we really like to meet strong opponents. My brother and I wanted to test our strength against players from the North and found the Dan Tri newspaper's pickleball tournament very attractive, so we signed up as soon as the regulations were issued.
Although it was the first time Dan Tri Pickleball Tournament was organized, it was very professional and methodical. The organizers worked very enthusiastically and supported the athletes in everything, making us feel very secure in competing. I have participated in many pickleball tournaments and must admit that the tournament organized by Dan Tri and PICKFAIR was great.

What impressed me most was that the tournament used all the athletes’ registration fees to build 5 charity houses in Cao Bang province, which is a very meaningful thing for the community. I hope there will be more tournaments like this so that everyone can join hands to help the unfortunate.
Pickleball is a sport considered new to Vietnamese people, but you have reached the Open level for professional athletes. Can you share more about the secret to being able to play pickleball well?
- Minh Luan and I both came from tennis backgrounds, so we have an advantage over those who have never played any sport. Those who have played badminton or table tennis also have certain advantages when switching to pickleball. The secret to being good at playing is nothing more than always having to persevere and practice hard.
What do you think about Minh Luan - your excellent teammate who won the Dan Tri pickleball championship?
- Minh Luan is younger than me but is an athlete with very good skills in both technique and thinking. Luan has very fast reflexes and good judgment, has many smart passes to score points as well as knows how to make the ball for me to finish a situation on the field.

The two brothers practiced together for a long enough time to understand each other's playing style and weaknesses to overcome and promote each other's strengths. That's why we had a convincing victory in the final match of the Dan Tri newspaper tournament.
What are your next goals for future tournaments?
- I have many more tournaments coming up in July and August. And of course my ultimate goal is still to collect more championships. The recent Dan Tri Pickleball Championship is both a motivation and a boost for me, giving me more energy and confidence to conquer the next titles.
