Pre-match review
Before the match against ASEAN All-Stars, coach Ruben Amorim emphasized that he wanted to bring a “fresh start” to MU after the disappointing 2024/25 season. However, what happened at Bukit Jalil Stadium (Malaysia) only made fans more worried.
In front of over 72,000 spectators, MU showed a lack of vitality and continuously wasted opportunities. Then, Maung Maung Lwin's powerful shot in the 71st minute sank them into another defeat - the Red Devils' 12th defeat in 2025 alone.
The defeat comes exactly a week after losing 0-1 to Tottenham in the Europa League final. This result means that MU will miss out on European competition next season for the first time in the past 35 years.
Despite beating Aston Villa 2-0 in the final round of the Premier League, MU has not had two consecutive victories in all competitions since mid-March. Those numbers are proof of a prolonged period of crisis, and the match against Hong Kong (China) is an opportunity for them to at least close May on a positive note.
Unlike the ASEAN All-Stars – a team selected from many countries, Hong Kong (China) is a team that is often involved at the international level, promising to bring a different challenge. This team is currently ranked 153rd in the world according to the FIFA rankings, and is under the leadership of coach Ashley Westwood - who was trained at the MU academy.
Hong Kong (China) have been in good form recently. Although they were held to a 0-0 draw by Singapore in the Asian Cup qualifiers in March, that match ended their seven-match winning streak - a record that shows that this team is not easy to beat.
Form, head-to-head history
In the last 6 matches in all competitions, Hong Kong (China) won 5 and drew 1. Meanwhile, this number for MU is 2 wins and 4 losses.
Tonight's match will be the first time in 19 years that Hong Kong (China) will face MU again. The last time the two teams met was in the summer of 2005, when Giuseppe Rossi and Dong Fangzhuo scored to help MU under Sir Alex Ferguson win 2-0 on their Asian tour.
Force information
United will be without Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui through injury – all three of whom missed the Asian tour. Out-of-contract Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen are also absent for personal reasons. Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and goalkeeper Andre Onana (who has returned home) are also absent.
Coach Ruben Amorim used 25 players in the match against ASEAN All-Stars, including first-team stars and young talents. He will likely continue to give opportunities to most of the remaining players in the squad.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong (China) has no notable absences. 23 of the 24 players on the list are playing in the domestic league. The only exception is striker Michael Udebuluzor, who plays for VfR Mannheim in Germany.
Hong Kong (China): Tse; Yue, Gerbig, Helio, Sun, Tan, Fernando, Ngan, Everton, Wong, Udebuluzor
MU Bayindir; Fredricson, Kamason, Heaven; Diallo, Mainoo, Collyer, Amass; Moorhouse, Fernandes; Obi
Score prediction: Hong Kong (China) 0 - 2 MU
