In a press conference in April during the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals between MU and Lyon, Matic (who was still playing for Lyon at the time) frankly commented on Onana's performance. "If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar gave me feedback, I would question myself. But if you are one of the worst goalkeepers in the history of MU, you need to be careful with what you say. You need to play well before saying things like that," Matic said.

Previously, Onana confidently declared that "MU is much stronger than Lyon" and "just need to focus on the team's performance instead of the opponent".

After MU's defeat to Grimsby in the second round of the League Cup in the early morning of August 28, Matic's comments were widely shared again. Onana was at fault for both goals conceded in the first half, causing the "Red Devils" to face many difficulties against the team playing in League Two.

Former player Dion Dublin criticised Onana on the BBC . He said: "I don't know what he did on the pitch. For the second goal, he just punched the ball away and nothing happened."

MU fans also criticized Onana and asked the board to urgently find a replacement goalkeeper this summer.

Mainoo's reaction when he was continuously crossed out On the night of August 24, Kobbie Mainoo bowed his head in disappointment because he was not allowed to play when MU was held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in round 2 of the 2025/26 Premier League.
