According to preliminary census results released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on May 29, Japan's population has decreased by 2.5% compared to the census conducted five years ago, indicating that the population decline has not yet stopped.
Hokkaido recorded the sharpest decline with 239,000 people, followed by Shizuoka with 164,000 and Hyogo with 141,000. Nationwide, only Tokyo and Okinawa recorded a population increase.
The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications believes that the nationwide population decline is mainly due to the aging population and an increasing natural decline, with the number of deaths exceeding the number of births.
Against the backdrop of an expected continued downward trend, pressure is mounting on the Japanese government to develop policies that will sustain regional communities and momentum for the world's fourth-largest economy .
