'Lightened burden' before graduation exam

VnExpressVnExpress26/06/2023

Phuong Thao, from Thai Binh, has time to surf the internet and relax before the graduation exam because she was admitted early to the Foreign Trade University two weeks ago.

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, class 12A1, Bac Duyen Ha High School, said that in the past, surfing social networks for about 30 minutes a day was a luxury. When she was admitted early, in addition to reducing her study intensity, Thao was eager to learn about the clubs and extracurricular activities at Foreign Trade University.

Female students take the May competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University. The exam consists of three parts: Quantitative Thinking (Mathematics), Qualitative Thinking (Literature - Language) and Science (Natural - Social).

Thao reviewed for the aptitude test in parallel with her regular school schedule. The female student said that because she was in a natural science elective class, she had a foundation in Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. For the remaining subjects, Thao proactively read documents, textbooks, and did some practice tests online. As a result, Thao scored 125/150 points, in the top 10 candidates with the highest scores out of 87,000 candidates. According to the conversion formula of Foreign Trade University, Thao scored 28.5 points and was admitted to the International Economics major.

"This result helps me feel more comfortable mentally, the high school graduation exam is no longer too stressful," Thao said.

Similarly, Nguyen Xuan Duy Thang, grade 12 student at Ung Hoa B High School (Hanoi), secured a place in the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, thanks to his 96.49 score in the thinking assessment - the highest among more than 7,000 candidates.

Previously, Thang was also admitted to the school's Computer Engineering major based on his profile (school report, first prize in the city's excellent student category in Physics) combined with an interview.

"I no longer feel pressured about the graduation exam," Thang shared. The male student has stopped taking extra classes, does not "cram" to do the test, but only reviews the knowledge, takes time to rest, and takes care of his health.

By the end of June 2023, many schools such as Foreign Trade, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City Bank, Foreign Affairs, Hanoi Law... had announced early admission results. Thousands of candidates like Thao and Thang were almost certain to be admitted to university, reducing the pressure before the upcoming high school graduation exam.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, there are currently about 20 university admission methods. Except for the graduation exam score method, the remaining methods are all early admission, including direct admission, review of academic records, combined consideration of international certificates, consideration of competency assessment test scores, thinking assessment... In 2022, more than 50% of the total 521,000 candidates admitted to school according to these methods.

Therefore, many schools focus on supporting students in early admission. Mr. Trinh Viet Hao, Vice Principal of Edison High School (Hung Yen), said that in addition to guiding students in preparing their scores and English certificates, the school also has a roadmap to help students get familiar with competency assessment exams. From grade 10, students are exposed to different types of questions, and in the following years, they are given mock exams.

"Early research and admission help students get admitted to their desired university, making it easier to get into university, reducing pressure compared to only being admitted based on graduation exam results," said Mr. Hao. This year, all 12th grade students of this school registered for early admission, 95% of them were eligible to be admitted to universities.

Master Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of Training Management Department, University of Commerce, also agreed that being admitted early before the graduation exam will help candidates relieve a lot of pressure. However, Mr. Trung warned candidates not to be subjective.

According to regulations, students need to pass high school graduation to be eligible for official university admission. This is not too difficult, but he advised candidates to check the requirements of the universities, because some schools have specific criteria for graduation exam scores. Last year, candidates who were admitted early to the University of Commerce based on their academic records had to achieve 20 graduation exam scores or higher in three subjects in the admission group.

In addition, regardless of the method of admission, candidates still need to register their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's system from July 10 to 30. This is a mandatory admission process. Mr. Trung advises candidates to put their favorite major as their first choice.

Three days before the high school graduation exam, Thao said she would still do her best, aiming for 9 points in each subject: Math, Chemistry, English (Group D07). If her high school graduation score is as expected, she can use it to register for some other wishes. If her test result is not as expected, Thao is not too worried because she has been admitted early.

"Early admission methods create many opportunities for candidates, helping them to enter their favorite majors and schools through many different paths," Thao said.

Duy Thang believes that even if you have not been admitted through the early admission method, you should not be too stressed before the graduation exam. According to Thang, the effective way to study these days is to review the knowledge you are not confident about, and you should not try to review too much, leading to having to stay up late and wake up early, affecting your health.

"The important thing at this time is to eat enough and sleep enough to enter the exam with the best mindset," Thang said.
