The 2025 Club World Cup has been the center of controversy in recent times over many aspects, such as the expansion of the competition schedule, the use of flexible pricing to sell tickets for matches... But now the tournament is about to face another challenge: the climate.
The National Weather Service is predicting heat risks for Miami and Los Angeles this weekend. With temperatures likely to exceed 30 degrees Celsius, the agency warns that “most heat-sensitive individuals” will be affected. This includes those “who engage in vigorous exercise or activity outdoors during hot weather during the day.” This weekend also marks the start of the 2025 Club World Cup.
The US is famous for hosting one of the hottest World Cups: consistently high temperatures at USA 1994, with the match between the Republic of Ireland and Mexico being played in temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius.
Over the past 30 years, the average temperature in the United States has increased by more than 1 degree Celsius. And the country has experienced 9 of the 10 hottest years on record.
Last year, when the Copa America was held in the United States, Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo had to be substituted midway through a match against Panama due to dizziness and low blood pressure due to dehydration. It was worth noting that the match took place at night in Miami.
Then in Canada's match against Peru in Kansas City, assistant referee Humberto Panjoj collapsed on the pitch and needed emergency medical treatment, also due to dehydration.
Canada defender Alistair Johnston called 5pm games unacceptable, saying: "It's not even safe for the fans, to be honest."
At the 2025 Club World Cup, 35 of the 63 scheduled matches will be played before 5pm. Eight of the 11 stadiums hosting the tournament will have little or no roof, which is also uncomfortable and even dangerous for fans.
The International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO) also spoke out, saying that if temperatures rise above 32 degrees Celsius, matches should be rescheduled.
