On September 12, 19-8 Hospital organized the International Conference "Updating advanced technology in cancer diagnosis and treatment".
Attending the event were representatives from the Traditional Medicine Hospital, Hospital 199 ( Ministry of Public Security ), Police infirmaries of several provinces; Professor Kenta Yamamoto, Nagoya Medical University (Japan), and reporters from Philips Imaging Technology Equipment Company and Hospital 19-8.

Speaking at the workshop, Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen, Director of 19-8 Hospital, said that not long ago, 19-8 Hospital pioneered the successful organization of a workshop on personalized medicine, introducing the technology of using artificial intelligence (AI) to combine multiple layers of data of the same patient in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Along with that, the workshop introduced personalized immunology technology in cancer treatment, in collaboration with major medical facilities in the country and Japan. The workshop created very positive public opinion, bringing new treatment opportunities to many patients.
The Director of Hospital 19-8 said that currently, cancer is always a topic of interest from basic research to clinical research due to the complexity of the pathogenesis of the disease as well as the response to treatment. The continuous application of early diagnosis technology and multi-modal combination treatment, including personalized immunotherapy, is very important, helping to increase treatment effectiveness and reduce the cost burden for patients and the health system.

With the spirit of being ahead of the curve, catching up with medical trends in advanced countries, with the core idea of always taking the patient as the center, 19-8 Hospital organized the Workshop "Updating advanced technology in cancer diagnosis and treatment" so that medical staff can be updated with advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques in liver cancer and breast cancer.
"In addition, the workshop is also a bridge for exchange and cooperation between researchers, scientists , and clinicians of 19-8 Hospital and Japanese medical experts. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for 19-8 Hospital to realize its vision of developing patient-centered clinical expertise, becoming a diverse and prestigious training, research, and international cooperation facility in the future," Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen emphasized.
Sharing his experience at the workshop, Professor Kenta Yamamoto, Nagoya Medical University, gave a valuable report on the triple marker set and ultrasound technique using second-generation contrast agents in the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer. The report received special attention because of the clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer in Japan, helping doctors at Hospital 19-8 and hospitals in the CAND Health System gain more knowledge and valuable experience in the practice of examining and treating patients.

At the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong, Director of the Oncology Center, Hospital 19-8, shared a report on updating multimodality in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma; Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hai, Oncology Center and resident doctor Nguyen Ha Phuong, Department of Diagnostic Imaging also had a report introducing updates on the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer and breast cancer.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong, currently, there are many advanced and modern methods to treat liver cancer patients in both early and late stages.
If liver cancer is detected in the early stages, there are many intervention methods such as: Liver tumor resection surgery, liver lobectomy, liver segmentectomy, liver transplantation, and there are also local treatment methods for patients with a small number of tumors, or few tumors that can be treated with microwave ablation or RFA.

In advanced stages or larger tumors, there is a method of hepatic embolization (injecting chemicals into the hepatic artery to reduce the blood vessels that nourish the liver tumor and reduce the size of the tumor). In addition, there are many treatment methods such as patients who pass the surgical stage will receive systemic treatment; multimodal treatment combines both local and systemic treatment, bringing the best results for the patient.
"With systemic treatment methods, 19-8 Hospital always approaches advanced treatment methods according to the latest protocols updated by the Ministry of Health such as targeted and immunotherapy drugs. The drugs are fully supplied by the hospital and patients have access to those drugs," said Dr. Phuong.

In particular, in 2025, the Ministry of Health has updated 2 more immunotherapy drugs to treat liver cancer patients at an inoperable stage and is promising for current liver cancer patients.
Two immunotherapy drugs, Durvalumab and Tremelimumab (also known as the STRIDE regimen), have shown positive results, creating a dual immunotherapy effect, enhancing T-cell activation and function at multiple stages of the immune response, maximizing the immune ability to kill cancer cells.
According to Dr. Phuong, the third phase of the study has now been completed and has been put into treatment. However, this is a new drug so the cost is very expensive, but for patients who are police officers, the CAND Health Insurance will cover it in full.
Of the two drugs, there is a type that costs about 200 million for a single treatment, followed by another immune treatment cycle, costing about 40 million for a 3-week cycle. Currently, this drug is not available in hospitals, but in the near future it will be available for treatment at Hospital 19-8.
