Ruby Roman is the most expensive grape variety in the world , grown in Japan, with a bunch once auctioned for up to 250 million VND. Now China is growing it massively, and Ruby Roman grapes are flooding the Vietnamese market for only 275,000 VND/bunch.
Every year in Japan, there is an auction of fruits, including Ruby Roman grapes . This special grape variety is grown in Ishikawa Prefecture, Central Japan, famous for its high sweetness and low acidity. Each grape weighs more than 20 grams. Ishikawa farmers have been researching and cultivating this rare grape variety for nearly 20 years, starting to sell it on the market since 2008.
In the auction, a bunch of 26 grapes was bid for the equivalent of 250 million VND - the most expensive price in the world.
In Vietnam, Ruby Roman grapes are imported and sold for 5-11 million VND per bunch. According to shop owners, despite being a super expensive fruit, customers still “line up” to buy them because of their unique delicious flavor.

Inside the grape are two layers like two egg yolks. One layer has the flavor of Japanese Peony grapes, the other layer has the flavor of a wine-flavored Pioneer grape. When eaten, these two flavors blend together, melting in the mouth, creating a very special taste.
However, in the past 2-3 years, in addition to Japanese Ruby Roman grapes, Ruby Roman grapes grown in Yunnan and Taiwan (China) have also appeared on the market. Notably, the grapes are sold at super cheap prices compared to Japanese products.
In recent days, Ruby Roman grapes have been sold in abundance on the online market. The goods are packaged in boxes of two bunches, weighing about 700-800 grams/bunch. Accordingly, the price of grapes ranges from 275,000-340,000 VND per bunch depending on the type.
According to the advertisement, this grape is very sweet, when you eat it you will feel the flavor of wine mixed with the flavor of candy. They are a Japanese grape variety grown in China, that's why they appear a lot on the market at super cheap prices.

Even Ms. Dao Thi Nhan, who sells fruit online in Tran Khat Chan (Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi ), commented that this year the price of Chinese Ruby Roman grapes is cheaper than before.
Last year, she first imported this type of grape and sold it for 400,000-600,000 VND/bunch depending on the type and time. Now, the season has just begun, and the price of the grapes on the market is only 550,000 VND/box of 2 bunches, or only 275,000 VND/bunch weighing 750 grams.
“Yesterday was the first shipment of the new grape crop, I sold nearly 80 bunches,” she revealed. Last year, in mid-July, when grapes were in season, each shipment contained about 200 bunches of Ruby Roman.
According to Ms. Nhan, this year the price of grapes will certainly be much cheaper than last year because the supply from China is larger than before. Goods imported from large wholesalers are available in any quantity.

Ms. Le Thi Thu Nga, a saleswoman at a large fruit store chain in Hanoi, said that although they are both Chinese grapes, Ruby Roman is more picky than milk grapes. Milk grapes are fragrant, moderately sweet, and large and crunchy. Meanwhile, Ruby Roman grapes are richly sweet, with a slight winey smell.
However, just after posting for sale on the weekend afternoon, after 1 night, the number of customers who confirmed to buy was more than 300 bunches. This batch of grapes will arrive tomorrow so she can fulfill the orders.
The first trip came back 3 days ago, Ms. Nga also sold out nearly 200 bunches. She is selling at 340,000 VND/bunch. The store sells individual bunches, but most customers choose to buy a whole box of 2 bunches.
“This type of grape has a certain group of regular customers. Many others buy it out of curiosity, wanting to taste the flavor of the grape that was once known as the most expensive in the world,” she shared.
