Thien Uu 8 affirms its name

In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop in Quang Ngai province, Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company (Vinaseed) in collaboration with Duc Phu Agricultural Cooperative (Mo Duc district) implemented a model of linking the production of 3 rice varieties Thien Uu 8, DB6, DB18 on 3 different fields in this locality. Currently, the rice is ripe and ready to be harvested. Each rice flower is full of grain, full, signaling a bumper crop.

Recently, Quang Nam Central Seed Joint Stock Company (Vinaseed Quang Nam) together with functional agencies and hundreds of farmers in many localities in Quang Ngai province organized a field visit to evaluate the adaptability and yield potential of Vinaseed rice varieties at the model in Duc Phu commune. Wherever they went, people were amazed at the superiority of Vinaseed varieties compared to the mass-produced rice varieties in the locality.

In Phu Hoa village field (Duc Phu commune), Thien Uu 8 rice field stands out with its golden color, each rice plant bending to support the heavy rice grains. Coming to Quang Ngai province as well as the Central Highlands region for more than 10 years, every year, Thien Uu 8 has never disappointed the farmers. The advantages of the variety are always maintained through each production season. Therefore, Thien Uu 8 is always a variety that farmers trust and prioritize, especially in the winter-spring crop.

According to farmers, compared to previous years, the weather in the winter-spring crop of 2024-2025 is quite harsh, adversely affecting the growth and development of rice plants. Especially during the flowering stage, low temperatures and rain cause many rice varieties to "hold" the flowers, bloom unevenly, leading to a decrease in yield. However, the Thien Uu 8 rice variety is not affected at all, the entire rice field still has flowers and full grains.

Mr. Huynh Chien (residing in Phu Hoa village, Duc Phu commune) said that this crop, his family produced 2.5 sao (500m2 sao) of Thien Uu 8 rice. Through the cultivation process, he realized that with the same care techniques as other rice varieties he had used before, Thien Uu 8 has many superior characteristics. "In addition to flowering evenly, Thien Uu 8 also resists lodging very well. Recently, there have been many strong northeast winds and continuous rains, but the rice plants still stand firm.

Farmers satisfied with DB6, DB18 from the first crop

In addition to Thien Uu 8 rice variety, which has affirmed its stable position over many years, in recent production seasons, Quang Ngai farmers have also had access to other quality rice varieties of Vinaseed, including DB6 and DB18. In most districts and towns in Quang Ngai province, whenever DB6 and DB18 are available, they have satisfied farmers right from the first time they were put into production.

Mr. Nguyen Ban (residing in Phu Thinh village, Duc Phu commune) said that for the first time producing in the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, he found that the DB18 variety is very easy to care for and has many advantages compared to previous varieties. DB18 is resistant to cold, heat, lodging, and pests very well. “This variety also adapts well to many soil types. Whether cultivated on sandy soil or acid sulfate soil, the rice field still gives very stable yields. This crop, the yield of my rice field is estimated at about 85 - 90 quintals/ha. While the previous varieties I produced only reached 75 - 80 quintals/ha,” said Mr. Ban.

In addition to quality rice varieties, rice varieties belonging to the processing line of Vinaseed Quang Nam such as DB6 are also highly appreciated by farmers who directly produce them. In addition to its resistance to adverse conditions and pests, productivity is also a "plus point" of the DB6 variety. With thick rice panicles, large, firm grains reaching the neck of the panicle, this rice variety shows its superiority over mass varieties.

Mr. Tran Tam (residing in Phu Thinh village, Duc Phu commune) said that in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, Vinaseed Quang Nam brought the DB6 rice variety to the locality for pilot production and showed very high efficiency. Therefore, in the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, he and many farmers in the area boldly continued to put this rice variety into production.

“Through the production process, I see that the investment level of DB6 variety is equivalent to other varieties. However, the variety has many outstanding characteristics such as strong plants, few pests and diseases, and grows well in many harsh weather conditions in both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops. Overall, this is a very promising variety, so I believe that in the coming crops, people will continue to expand the production of this rice variety,” said Mr. Tam.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, Deputy Director of Duc Phu Agricultural Cooperative, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the unit coordinated with Vinaseed Quang Nam to implement a production linkage model of 5 hectares of 3 rice varieties DB6, DB18 and Thien Uu 8. This year, the unfavorable weather has extended the growth period of the varieties.

“However, the varieties have all shown their advantages, especially good resistance to many pests and diseases and ensuring productivity. Through monitoring and evaluation, DB6, DB18 and Thien Uu 8 are all very suitable for the soil in most villages in the commune. From this result, we hope to have a long-term relationship with the company and at the same time replicate the model,” said Mr. Quang.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Phi, Deputy Director of Vinaseed Quang Nam, said that Thien Uu 8 rice variety has existed and been trusted by farmers in Quang Ngai for more than 10 years. Up to now, through the model, farmers have confirmed that the variety still has many good characteristics in terms of productivity and resistance.

"To help people have more access to new rice varieties, our company has brought two varieties, DB6 and DB18, to Duc Phu commune to implement the model. Through production, people all assessed that these are varieties with suitable growing time. In addition, the rice quality of the two varieties is also relatively good. DB18 has soft, delicious rice. DB6 has high yield, suitable for processing vermicelli and cakes. These two varieties are resistant to pests and diseases and can withstand the heat in the Central region, suitable for both crop production," Mr. Phi assessed.

"Thien Uu 8 is resistant to pests and diseases. In previous years, when using other rice varieties, I had to use pesticides to kill planthoppers at this time, but this year, I did not spray and the rice still did not have pests and diseases, reducing the cost of pesticides. Regarding productivity, just a quick look can estimate that Thien Uu 8 this crop is about 8 tons/ha. That is very satisfying in this difficult production season," said farmer Huynh Chien, residing in Phu Hoa village, Duc Phu commune.
