Vinaseed's rice varieties have not disappointed farmers.

QUANG NGAI - Despite facing extremely harsh weather conditions during the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season, Vinaseed's rice varieties still brought satisfaction to farmers.

Thien Uu 8 solidifies its reputation.

During the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season in Quang Ngai province, Vinaseed Corporation, in collaboration with Duc Phu Agricultural Cooperative (Mo Duc district), implemented a production linkage model for three rice varieties – Thien Uu 8, DB6, and DB18 – on three different plots of land in the area. The rice is now ripe and ready for harvest. Each rice stalk is heavy with plump, full grains, signaling a bountiful harvest.

Recently, the Central Seed Company of Quang Nam (Vinaseed Quang Nam), along with relevant authorities and hundreds of farmers from various localities in Quang Ngai province, organized a field visit to assess the adaptability and yield potential of Vinaseed's rice varieties at a model farm in Duc Phu commune. Everywhere they went, the farmers were full of praise and admiration for the superiority of Vinaseed's varieties compared to the common rice varieties currently grown locally.

In the fields of Phu Hoa village (Duc Phu commune), the Thien Uu 8 rice variety stands out with its golden hue, each rice plant bending under the weight of its heavy, grain-laden ears. Having been present in Quang Ngai province and the Central-Western Highlands region for over 10 years, Thien Uu 8 has never disappointed farmers. Its advantages have been consistently maintained through each production season. Therefore, Thien Uu 8 remains a trusted and preferred choice for farmers, especially during the winter-spring crop.

According to local farmers, compared to previous years, the weather during the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season was quite harsh, adversely affecting the growth and development of rice plants. Particularly during the flowering stage, low temperatures and rain caused many rice varieties to have stunted flowering, resulting in reduced yields. However, the Thien Uu 8 rice variety remained unaffected, with all rice fields producing uniformly sized, plump grains.

Mr. Huynh Chien (residing in Phu Hoa village, Duc Phu commune) said that this season, his family cultivated 2.5 sao (500m2 per sao) of Thien Uu 8 rice. Through the cultivation process, he noticed that while using the same care techniques as other rice varieties he had used before, Thien Uu 8 has many superior characteristics. "Besides flowering evenly, Thien Uu 8 also has very good resistance to lodging. Recently, there have been many strong northeast winds and continuous rains, but the rice plants have remained standing."

Farmers are satisfied with DB6 and DB18 from the first crop.

Besides the Thien Uu 8 rice variety, which has established a stable position over many years, in recent production seasons, farmers in Quang Ngai have also had access to other high-quality rice varieties from Vinaseed, including DB6 and DB18. In most districts and towns in Quang Ngai province, whenever DB6 and DB18 are introduced, they satisfy farmers from the very first time they are put into production.

Mr. Nguyen Ban (residing in Phu Thinh village, Duc Phu commune) said that during his first crop production in the 2024-2025 winter-spring season, he found the DB18 variety very easy to cultivate and with many advantages compared to previous varieties. DB18 has excellent cold and heat tolerance, lodging resistance, and pest and disease resistance. “This variety also adapts well to various soil types. Whether cultivated on sandy loam or acidic soil, the rice field still yields very stable productivity. This season, my rice field's yield is estimated at about 85-90 quintals/hectare. While the previous varieties I cultivated only yielded 75-80 quintals/hectare,” Mr. Ban said.

Besides high-quality rice varieties, Vinaseed Quang Nam's processing rice varieties such as DB6 are also highly appreciated by farmers who directly cultivate them. In addition to its resistance to unfavorable conditions and pests, yield is also a "plus point" of the DB6 variety. With dense panicles and large, firm grains extending to the neck of the panicle, this rice variety demonstrates superiority over common varieties.

Mr. Tran Tam (residing in Phu Thinh village, Duc Phu commune) said that in the 2024 summer-autumn crop season, Vinaseed Quang Nam introduced the DB6 rice variety to the locality for pilot production and showed very high efficiency. Therefore, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season, he and many other farmers in the area have boldly continued to introduce this rice variety into production.

“Through the production process, I found that the investment cost for the DB6 variety is comparable to other varieties. However, this variety has many outstanding characteristics such as strong stems, low susceptibility to pests and diseases, and good growth in various harsh weather conditions during both the winter-spring and summer-autumn seasons. Overall, this is a very promising variety, so I believe that in the coming seasons, people will continue to expand the production of this rice variety,” Mr. Tam commented.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, Deputy Director of Duc Phu Agricultural Cooperative, for the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the cooperative is collaborating with Vinaseed Quang Nam to implement a production linkage model on 5 hectares using three rice varieties: DB6, DB18, and Thien Uu 8. This year, unfavorable weather conditions have prolonged the growth period of these varieties.

“Nevertheless, all the varieties have demonstrated their advantages, especially good resistance to many pests and diseases and ensuring high yields. Through monitoring and evaluation, DB6, DB18, and Thien Uu 8 are all very suitable for the soil in most villages in the commune. Based on these results, we hope to have a long-term partnership with the company and to expand the model,” Mr. Quang said.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Phi, Deputy Director of Vinaseed Quang Nam, said that the Thien Uu 8 rice variety has existed and been trusted by farmers in Quang Ngai for more than 10 years. To date, through the model, farmers have confirmed that the variety still has many good characteristics in terms of yield and resistance.

"To give farmers more access to new rice varieties, our company has introduced two varieties, DB6 and DB18, to Duc Phu commune to implement a model. Through production, the people have all evaluated these varieties as having suitable growth periods. In addition, the rice quality of both varieties is relatively good. The DB18 variety has soft, delicious rice. The DB6 variety has high yield, suitable for processing into vermicelli and cakes. These two varieties have good resistance to pests and diseases and tolerate hot weather well in the Central region, suitable for production in both seasons," Mr. Phi assessed.

"Thien Uu 8 has good pest and disease resistance. In previous years, when using other rice varieties, I had to use pesticides to control rice planthoppers at this time, but this year I didn't spray and the rice still showed no signs of pests, reducing pesticide costs. In terms of yield, just by looking at it, I can estimate that Thien Uu 8 will yield about 80 quintals/hectare this season. That's already very satisfying in this difficult production season," shared farmer Huynh Chien, residing in Phu Hoa village, Duc Phu commune.
