New research from travel health insurance company AllClear has revealed the places in the world with the best tap water, according to travelers. According to the company, tap water helps travelers save money and reduce plastic waste.
New York City is home to the world's best tap water, thanks to its source in the Catskills. Many believe this water is responsible for the distinct taste of New York pizza and bagels. Seattle is also highly rated, with many former residents "missing the water when they leave." In Portland, Oregon, many locals say the tap water is the reason they don't want to leave the city.
Scotland ranks first in Europe and second in the world for tap water from the highlands and natural lakes, especially Loch Katrine - which provides water that tastes as pure as bottled water.
Nordic countries like Iceland and Norway also appear on the list. In Iceland, tap water is so common that people hardly buy bottled water, and it is mainly sold to tourists. In the Alps, Switzerland, Austria and Germany are highly regarded for their glacier and mountain lake water. Cities like Vienna in Austria; Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich in Switzerland all have fresh, drinkable tap water. Rome is also popular for its public fountains, where visitors can easily refill their bottles for free.
Other destinations like Armenia, Aruba, Japan, Nepal, and the Netherlands are also mentioned but are not as popular with tourists. AllClear's research is aimed at travelers who want to reduce plastic waste, save money, and ensure enough drinking water on the go. According to a survey by UK-based research and data analysis company - YouGov, 71% of Britons are trying to reduce their carbon footprint, of which 63% prioritize reusing disposable items instead of buying bottled water.
While many destinations have delicious and safe tap water, travelers should be aware that not all places have the same quality water. AllClear offers some guidelines to help ensure your health when drinking tap water abroad.
First, test your tolerance. While tap water may be safe, mineral content varies from place to place. If you have a sensitive stomach, try a small amount first or stick with bottled water.
Travellers should also be cautious when visiting rural or remote islands. In many countries, tap water in major cities is safe to drink, but the quality of water in rural or island areas may not be guaranteed. For example, in Spain, the water in Madrid is safe, but in Ibiza or other rural areas, drinking it is not recommended.
Additionally, if tap water is not safe to drink, use bottled water to brush your teeth and avoid getting water in your mouth when showering. Visitors should also avoid ice cubes, which may be made from unfiltered water, and limit the consumption of raw vegetables washed in tap water. If you have a sensitive digestive system, bring a water filter or water purification tablets, which help remove impurities and bacteria.
