In a new analysis, citrus fruits, kiwis, apples and watermelon were shown to benefit gut health, reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Citrus fruits
According to a recent meta-analysis by gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab, published in the journalWorld Gastroenterology , citrus fruits are very beneficial for your health.
“Citrus fruits are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, which are known to benefit gut bacteria, helping to prevent the risk of colorectal cancer,” Salhab explained in a recent TikTok video .
Add oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes to your diet."
Kiwi
In his videos, Salhab says he is particularly fond of kiwis, which have at least some digestive benefits. Salhab’s new meta-analysis suggests that kiwis may help reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
“Kiwis are high in fiber, which is great for your gut bacteria,” he explains. “They’re one of the foods that can help stimulate bowel movements.”
Apple
“Apples have a really powerful protective effect on the colon,” explains Salhab. “Apples are a prebiotic and one of the ‘superfruits’ because they’re really beneficial for your organs, including the liver.”
This is not the first time research has found benefits from eating apples. Another study found that people who ate at least one apple a day were less likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who did not eat the fruit.
For those who are a bit picky, Salhab suggests slicing apples and adding cinnamon and honey to turn them into a delicious and healthy snack.
Watermelon
It’s hard to think of anything more refreshing than biting into a slice of fresh watermelon on a hot summer day. But beyond being a refreshing snack and dessert, watermelon is also one of the few fruits linked to health, especially gut health, according to Salhab’s latest meta-analysis.
“Watermelon had one of the strongest effects on reducing colorectal cancer risk in this meta-analysis, probably due to its lycopene content,” says Salhab. Lycopene is the antioxidant that gives watermelon its bright pink color.
