(Dan Tri) - In the fierce and dramatic 2024 US presidential election, the emergence of independent candidates and small parties is attracting public attention.

Among them, Ms. Jill Stein of the Green Party is of particular interest in terms of her ability to influence the final result.
Female candidate Jill Stein, 74 years old this year, is not a stranger to American politics, having run for president in 2012 and 2016.
She has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies such as the environmental "Green New Deal," supported a ceasefire in Gaza to ease Palestinian suffering, called for an end to the war in Ukraine, and proposed a number of left-leaning economic policies.
It is worth noting that in previous elections, Ms. Stein did not receive much support from voters, winning only about 1% of the total votes nationwide.
While that number may seem modest, the actual number of popular votes she won was in the millions and could have a significant impact in battleground states, where the outcome is often decided by very small margins, sometimes even just a few hundred thousand votes.
Looking back at the 2016 election, many people still remember the case of former Senator Hillary Clinton losing to Mr. Donald Trump despite receiving more popular votes.
In some key states, the gap between the two main candidates is only a few hundred thousand votes, while the number of votes Ms. Stein received could have been enough to change the situation if those votes had gone to the Democratic candidate.
In fact, within the Democratic Party at that time, there was public opinion that "accused" Ms. Jill of being the one who "obstructed" former Secretary of State Hillary's path to the White House.
However, this assumption is not well-founded and should be viewed with caution, because it cannot be assumed that Green Party voters would automatically support the Democratic Party without the presence of Ms. Stein, especially when votes for the Green Party are often just a manifestation of voters' resistance to the two largest parties in the US political system.
Entering 2024, the country's political landscape has changed significantly. In addition to Jill Stein, the race also includes independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who initially attracted significant attention from voters, but later gradually lost interest, forcing him to withdraw and switch to supporting former President Trump.
In addition, key issues such as conflict in the Middle East, foreign policy and climate change have created new dynamics in dividing voters, which are also the points where Ms. Jill is more popular with voters than Vice President Kamala Harris.
With the close gap between the two main candidates, Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump, as seen, the number of votes that Green Party candidate Jill Stein will receive, although still very small compared to the two candidates above, can still, in theory, create a decisive influence on the final result.
Whether or not this will come true won't be long in coming, as the ballot boxes have finally been closed and the counting process has begun across the land of the stars and stripes.
