According to the author, "these stories are like glittering shards of pottery scattered here and there," silently guiding the writer through various emotional states and helping them discover the magical beauty of life.
In particular, the way the author naturally reflects the dual impact of the digital age on urban life in each short story leads the reader to ponder and reflect on the "trivial details" that people usually overlook.
With a gentle yet profound writing style, the author not only evokes memories and empathy but also whispers a deeply humane message. It is in seemingly ordinary and insignificant things that great human values are hidden.
The author seems to have a profound understanding of each character's thoughts and feelings. Some stories depict even minor conflicts in life, yet her characters clearly represent a group of people, a social class. Therefore, readers see themselves and their own problems reflected in them.
For example, the author tells the story of a modern-day couple's inner turmoil and seemingly minor conflicts over whether to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with the husband's or wife's family. What seems like a trivial matter becomes a psychological trauma for their daughter, to the point where she wishes there were no Tet so her parents wouldn't argue…
Each story ending resonates with subtle melodies, opening up gentle reflections and judgments in the minds of each individual, urging them to act promptly for the greater good.
The most impressive aspect is the art of language use and storytelling. The language in each story is told naturally but not arbitrarily. Every word is carefully chosen by Le Hang and possesses a dynamic quality. When describing the weary footsteps of an elderly man, she uses words like: "falling" onto the road and echoing with a "melancholy sound," or when describing the face of an old person, she uses words like "the wrinkles begin to sob"...
The diverse narrative style and multiple point of view create different levels of appeal for the reader. It seems that, with her talent in various artistic fields, Le Hang has skillfully applied it, making her short stories imbued with the artistic language of cinema, poetry, and painting, creating a captivating narrative in each story.
If one of the magical values of literature is to center on beauty and goodness, aiming to inspire people, build character, and contribute to social reform, then Le Hang has achieved this through her stories, which she calls "magical little details."
Each short story sows seeds of love, selflessness, and compassion in the reader's heart, awakening thoughts, actions, and responsibilities towards family and society that are sometimes forgotten due to the rapidly changing life of the digital age.
Like me, when you close the pages of the short story collection "Magical Little Things," the lingering effect is like a ringing bell reminding you to slow down, look deeper into each small moment, and believe more in kindness. "Magical Little Things" isn't a sensational collection, but it has the ability to touch the reader's heart quietly, with the understated beauty of kindness that still exists somewhere in this life.
