Kim Ngan is a poor border commune, the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic group accounts for about 90% of the population. Due to difficult conditions, people here do not have access to information and vocational training. They lack knowledge about socio -economic development, do not have skills or degrees, so they do not have sustainable jobs.
For women, they are even more disadvantaged as gender stereotypes are still strong, housework and childcare are the responsibility of women. Therefore, they do not have the opportunity to pursue higher education, participate in community activities and meetings or capacity building activities.
Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Kim Ngan Commune, Ho Thi Nhanh, said: "In order to reduce information poverty, create income, and contribute to empowering women, in recent times, the Women's Union of the commune has coordinated with relevant units to organize many communication and training sessions on the application of science and technology in production, life skills, and anti-child marriage; knowledge and information to enhance economic empowerment for women...
In addition, the association also effectively implemented the activities of Project 8 to support livelihood models (pigs, chickens, buffaloes, cows) to help women develop production and improve their lives. Thanks to that, the awareness of women in the commune has changed significantly, especially in accessing decision-making activities in the family, community and proactively developing production...

Under the direction of the Quang Tri Provincial Women's Union, grassroots women's unions at all levels have actively implemented many practical activities to reduce information poverty. Unions at all levels have organized multidimensional poverty reduction training courses for branches, groups and women's union members. Communication and consultation sessions on loans and vocational training are regularly held in communes across the province, especially in mountainous, remote and isolated communes. In parallel, unions at all levels have also focused on vocational training and job placement for thousands of women union members.
To support women to escape poverty, the unions at all levels have actively conducted surveys and reviewed the needs of their members. From there, they have made a list to monitor and help those in difficult circumstances. The provincial Women's Union has taken advantage of domestic and foreign sponsoring organizations, programs and projects to support women members to access investment capital for economic development; especially doing a good job of entrusting with the Social Policy Bank managed by the unions at all levels. In addition, the union has focused on implementing Project 939, organizing Women's Entrepreneurship Day, supporting connection to consume products produced by women members...
Chairman of the Women's Union of Thuong Trach Commune, Y Buot, shared: "Following the direction of the Provincial Women's Union, in recent times, the Women's Union of the commune has actively provided information support to women, especially those in difficult circumstances, to help them promptly grasp the policies and benefits.
The Association also cooperates with the Provincial Women's Development Support Fund, the Provincial Red Cross Society... to support many women with interest-free capital to raise breeding cows, geese... Hoping for a brighter future for women in ethnic minority areas, in the coming time, the Commune Women's Union will continue to promote solutions to reduce information poverty, helping women improve their lives and confidently assert themselves".
With the desire to improve access to vocational training to improve the quality of human resources and empower ethnic minority women economically, recently, the Management Board of the Francophone Project (under the Provincial Women's Development Support Fund) has also implemented many practical activities in mountainous communes.
Specifically, the Francophone Project Management Board has organized communication and training classes to help women access agricultural techniques, farming techniques, weaving, cooking; fostering professional skills, tourism skills... In particular, with the accompanying efforts of the project, the Cooperative Group "Developing cultural tourism of the Bru-Van Kieu community in Lam Thuy commune (old)" and "Community cultural tourism group - Bru-Van Kieu women in Kim Thuy commune (old)" have been formed, bringing a new direction in economic development for ethnic minority women.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Huy, Deputy Director of the Quang Tri Province Women's Development Support Fund, said: "Before implementation, the project thoroughly surveyed the actual needs, so the implementation was quite effective and achieved the set goals. One of the most important contributions of the project is the formation of a community tourism group model led by Bru-Van Kieu ethnic women.
This is a new direction, in line with the local reality as well as the policies of the Party, State and province on tourism development associated with cultural preservation, sustainable economic development for ethnic minorities, especially women. Close cooperation with media units and travel companies will help widely promote the model as well as the unique cultural values of the Bru-Van Kieu people to tourists.
