Cam Xuyen farmers share experiences in raising loach

Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung (born in 1984, Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh ) boldly tried raising loach cartilage - a relatively new species in the locality. After more than 4 months of care, the loach grew well and was ready to be sold.

The pond for raising loaches has an area of over 1,000 ^m2 of Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung's family.

With a family pond of more than 1,000 ^square meters, Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung (Binh Vinh village, Cam Binh commune) initially chose to raise traditional fish but the results were not high.

Through research, Mr. Trung realized that the loach has delicious meat, soft bones, high nutritional value, strong consumer market, and stable price. Moreover, loach adapts to a variety of living environments and is very easy to raise. However, in the area, no household raises loach, so he was quite hesitant to invest in raising this catfish species.

After learning from successful loach farming facilities in Ha Nam , in early February 2023, Mr. Trung decided to buy nearly 200,000 fry to raise on an area of over 1,000 ^m2 .

After more than 4 months of raising, the survival rate of loach reached over 70%, it was time to sell, the weight reached 40-50 loach/kg, the estimated output reached more than 1.4 tons. With the selling price of 100 thousand VND/kg, Mr. Trung expected to earn more than 140 million VND from this batch, after deducting expenses, the profit was nearly 70 million VND.

After more than 4 months of farming, the loach reaches a weight of 40-50 fish/kg.

Sharing about the techniques and experience of raising loach, Mr. Trung said that it is necessary to select quality, uniform size, and disease-free breeds. Before releasing the breed, all miscellaneous fish must be removed to avoid them competing for food with the loach.

Raising loach in ponds does not require high techniques but must be cared for according to the correct process. Unlike loach in nature that usually lives in the mud, loach has the habit of floating on the water surface to find food, so it is quite convenient for care, pond cleaning and disease prevention.

Cartilaginous loach has delicious meat, soft bones, and high nutritional value.

Due to their floating and gluttonous nature, raising loach is not too difficult, just pay attention to feeding on time. Loaches mainly eat at night, so feed them 1 to 2 times a day and mainly in the evening. The main food of loach is rice bran and plankton.

The most important requirement in raising loach is to ensure environmental factors and water quality for stable loach development. Depending on the growth period, farmers provide appropriate amounts of food, not too much to change the pond environment.

In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to measures to protect the loach, especially from birds, rats, etc. that hunt at night. Mr. Trung said that currently, the loach is quite popular in the market. Therefore, in addition to supplying to restaurants and hotels in the province, many traders and consumers also come to the house to buy.

Through a survey of the loach farming model of Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung, it shows that this species grows well, suitable for local soil, water and climate conditions.

After Mr. Trung's model is sold with good results, the locality will organize a training conference to guide farming techniques for households in need and meeting the conditions for replication. Thereby, promoting the development of the agricultural sector, contributing to accelerating the economic growth rate in the locality.
