Install cameras and chips to monitor durian
Cat Tien 2 land, where people from all regions came to build hamlets and villages and plant cashew trees, has now changed. Instead of cashew, the poverty-reducing crops are durian, mangosteen, rambutan, fruits that aim to make people rich.
Farmer Nguyen Tuan Quang.
“Around 2005, when this area did not pay much attention to durian trees, I went to learn from people in Ha Lam and Phuoc Loc. After that, I decided to experiment with growing durian on my own garden. That was the 18-year-old durian tree, which is currently producing a very stable harvest for my family,” said Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang, a farmer in Cat Tien 2 commune.
Currently, Mr. Quang's family has 4 hectares of durian, all of which are high-quality durian varieties such as Monthon and Ri6. His durian garden is strictly managed by a surveillance camera system, with an irrigation chip installed to monitor the amount of irrigation water during the dry season. Mr. Quang shared that durian is a very "difficult" tree, it cannot tolerate too much water but it cannot tolerate too little water either. Therefore, farmers must pay close attention to the amount of water they irrigate every day.
Durian gardens are monitored by camera systems.
“The 2025 durian season is very difficult for durian growers due to early and irregular rains, making care difficult, causing many young fruits to fall and unripe fruits. In our area, young fruit falling makes farmers worried. However, if farmers understand the cultivation process, understand the trees and gardens, they will limit damage from the effects of the weather,” the experienced farmer shared.
It is known that in addition to the nearly 20-year-old durian area, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang also cultivates a young durian garden. With a total area of 4 hectares, Mr. Quang earns billions of dong from durian every year.
Underground pipe system for flood treatment
Mr. Le Doan Loi - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cat Tien 2 Commune, greatly admired farmer Nguyen Tuan Quang. Mr. Loi highly appreciated: "Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang is an exemplary farmer, good at growing durian, a member of the commune's durian technical advisory team, and a person who is willing to share information with the people. The development of the commune's durian area has the contribution of Mr. Quang, a typical farmer".
Mr. Le Doan Loi's assessment really mentioned Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang as a farmer specializing in agricultural consulting. Among them, it is impossible not to mention the underground pipe system for flood water treatment, an important model for Cat Tien 2 area. "This area is right next to Dong Nai river, in the rainy season, the water cannot drain fast enough, the garden is flooded, which is normal. But durian trees that are flooded will rot their roots and fall off their fruits, and if they are flooded for a long time, they will die. Therefore, I have researched and created an underground water collection system in the garden, which is simple, inexpensive and effective", Mr. Quang informed.
The underground water collection system includes water collection pits dug deep, from 1.5 - 2 m, carefully built with bricks. Rainwater and water in the garden quickly flow into the pit. In the pit, Mr. Quang installed a pipe system so that the water flows directly to the Dong Nai River, 300 m away. Mr. Quang said that the water collected in the pit and flowing through the pipe to the river is very effective. The pit - pipe system is simple, any farmer can make it for their family.
As a good farmer, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang is willing to share his knowledge and experience with the surrounding farmers. For him, durian is a companion tree, helping farmers in remote areas to rise up and become rich on the riverside land.
