Amidst temperatures that at times exceeded 39 degrees Celsius, people in Hoang Chau commune busily pulled carts loaded with water to the fields to irrigate their crops.

In addition to increasing watering, many households are also proactively covering their vegetable beds with plastic sheeting to reduce water evaporation and retain soil moisture.

Along with watering, households utilize tree trunks as mulch to cover vegetable beds and protect crops from the heat.

People in Hau Loc commune are applying sprinkler irrigation technology to retain moisture for their crops.

In fields near residential areas, people use water pumps to irrigate their crops and combat drought.

In Ngoc Lien commune, to protect their pineapple plants from the sun, some households have invested in automatic irrigation systems to ensure the plants retain moisture.

According to the Thanh Hoa Provincial Meteorological and Hydrological Station's forecast, due to the influence of a developing and expanding hot low-pressure area in the West, Thanh Hoa province will continue to experience hot and intensely hot weather on May 26th and 27th, 2026, with some areas experiencing exceptionally intense heat. The highest temperatures will generally range from 36-38°C, with some areas exceeding 39°C; the lowest humidity will be between 40-45%.

According to Mr. Trinh Van Chat, Head of the Crop Production Department, Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department - Department of Agriculture and Environment: “The prolonged heatwave has greatly affected agricultural production, especially short-term vegetable crops. The agricultural sector advises localities and people to increase rational irrigation, cover the soil, apply water-saving irrigation methods, and proactively care for crops during appropriate hours to minimize damage.”

Along with caring for the crops, the forces of Yen Nhan commune actively support people in harvesting the spring rice crop, freeing up land for the summer crop production to ensure the set schedule is met.

To ensure drought prevention for crops, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has established working groups to inspect irrigation works throughout the province and prepare plans to ensure irrigation water supply should drought occur.
According to the Thanh Hoa Provincial Meteorological and Hydrological Station's forecast, from May to July 2026, the hot weather situation in the province will continue to be complex with approximately 9-11 heat waves, including 3-4 prolonged periods of intense heat. The intensity of the heat may be more severe than in the same period of 2025, posing a potential risk of water shortage, drought, and widespread saltwater intrusion. Forecasts indicate prolonged and widespread heatwaves, with an estimated 14,000-15,000 hectares at risk of water shortages, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the province. Of this, 8,600-9,800 hectares are likely to experience drought conditions that could affect crop yields. | |
