(QNgTV) - The durian harvest in the western region of Quang Ngai is approaching. Durian farmers here are worried because of the heavy rain, which could affect the yield and quality of durian. Farmers are anxious before the durian harvest.
In Ia Chim commune, Quang Ngai province, Mr. Pham Ngoc Tuan's family has 2 hectares of durian. He said that for more than a month, the area has been raining continuously and heavily. This has directly affected the stage when durian produces rice and nourishes ripe fruit. Currently, some ripe fruits have shown signs of being hard.
In addition to Ia Chim commune, key durian growing areas in the western region of Quang Ngai province have been affected by heavy rains. Many heavy rains have occurred since the beginning of the season, disrupting the growth cycle of trees and causing fungi and young fruit to fall. Gardeners say that in addition to quality risks, this year's durian output has also decreased by 15%-30% compared to previous years.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hoan, in Sa Loong commune, said that this month is durian month, families are harvesting, however this month is mostly short of sunshine, but it rains a lot. Heavy rain greatly affects fruit trees, not only durian but also all rambutans that produce fruit are greatly affected by rainwater, they are shocked by heat, shocked by too much water. It greatly affects the overall yield.
Ia Chim Agricultural , Trade and Service Cooperative has more than 85 hectares. The average yield is from 17 tons - 20 tons of fruit/ha. In 2024, the unit will export about 100 tons of Thai durian and Ri 6 to the Chinese market. This year, due to heavy rain, members of the cooperative have invested more in fertilizer and technology costs, but it is still difficult to avoid the effects. The price of durian at the beginning of the season is currently fluctuating from 55,000 VND - 76,000 VND/kg. The cooperative is worried that if the rain continues, the situation of durian pulp being hard, segments being mushy, and not turning color will occur on a large scale. This will both lower the cost and affect the unit's durian export target.
Mr. Bui Trung Son, Director of Ia Chim Agricultural, Trade and Service Cooperative, Ia Chim Commune, said: " If the rain continues, the risk of water stagnation is very high. Currently, the solution for Ia Chim people is to first clear the grass and clear the ditches in the areas where water stagnates; second, to apply fertilizers rich in trace elements, especially zinc, magnesium and other trace elements, and to apply phosphorus and potassium."
Durian is a staple crop in many localities in the province. In the western region alone, there are over 3,779 hectares, of which over 1,000 hectares have produced products. Each hectare of durian when harvested stably brings about 1 billion VND/year in income to producers. There is only half a month left until the peak durian harvest season in 2025. This period is in the golden period for durian to achieve sweetness and characteristic flavor. In the face of unfavorable weather developments, local authorities have regularly surveyed and grasped the situation to have timely support solutions for the people.
Mr. Do Hong Quoc, Chairman of the Ia Chim Commune Farmers' Association, shared: "The Farmers' Association also regularly accompanies farmer members who have durian gardens, mainly durian gardens. We also monitor the gardens of households, regularly grasp the thoughts and aspirations of farmer members about fruits and prices, then products, output, and how the weather affects them to have recommendations and proposals to the sectors at all levels to support the people."
With the attention and support of local authorities, durian farmers are also working hard to care for their crops in the hope of a sweet fruit season.
