Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters recently went to the vast fields of cantaloupe (also known as golden cantaloupe) in Thu Thua District ( Long An ) and witnessed farmers here excited because of the bumper crop and good prices, thanks to which they have a good income right after the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024.
Long An province's yellow melons are the most consumed at agricultural markets in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Van (56 years old, residing in My Phu commune, Thu Thua district, Long An) said that this crop, her family cultivated 1.8 hectares of yellow melon. Currently, the melon is in harvest season, with a yield of over 50 tons/ha. With a selling price of 4,200 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, she will have a profit of about 350 million VND.
In addition to the main income from harvesting ripe melons, small melons (pass melons) are also used by growers to make pickles, salted melons, pickles... with the value obtained per hectare (1,000 m2 ) from 1 - 1.5 million VND.
With a yield of over 5 tons/acre and high selling price, melon growers in Long An earn about 20 million VND/acre after 45 days of care.
According to Ms. Van, cantaloupe is a short-term crop (harvested after about 45 days) and can be grown in multiple crops a year. Because the plant has a short life cycle, farmers can proactively calculate the time from planting to harvesting, avoiding extreme seasonal weather events and saline intrusion in the dry season. Currently, while saltwater from the Vam Co, Tien, and Xoai Rap river systems is encroaching heavily on Long An's inland fields, cantaloupe is in the harvest season and is not affected.
The melon crop also creates jobs for hundreds of local workers, with an income of over 500,000 VND/person/day.
Long An is the province with the largest melon growing area in the West, with an area of over 100 hectares. Melon is a crop that can grow strongly in high sand fields, so it is suitable for the soil in Thu Thua and Ben Luc districts of Long An province.
Long An melons are mainly consumed at agricultural markets in Ho Chi Minh City and are commonly sold at traditional markets in the West. Ripe melons are considered a very good summer cooling food.
