At this time, Yen Khanh district is entering the peak of the spring peanut harvest. Across the fields, farmers are excited because this year peanuts have a good harvest and good prices.
The recent showers have loosened the soil, making it the right time for Ms. Pham Thi Mong, Khanh Loi Commune, Yen Khanh District, and her children to go to the fields to harvest peanuts. Unloading each clump of peanuts, Ms. Mong excitedly said: "It has been many years since my peanuts had a good harvest and quality like this year. If last year the yield was only 1.3 quintals/sao, this year it is about 1.6 quintals/sao. The quality of the peanuts is also plump, even and older than last year."
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Lieu, Vice Chairman of Khanh Loi Commune People's Committee, Yen Khanh District informed: As one of the localities with a large peanut growing area in Yen Khanh District, in the 2023 Winter-Spring crop, the entire Khanh Loi commune planted 41 hectares of peanuts. In the past time, the locality has worked with the Khanh Loi Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative to urge people to regularly monitor weather developments and crop schedules to have appropriate fertilization plans, mobilize people to implement measures to kill rats and focus on care at important times such as flowering, rooting, etc. Thanks to that, the peanuts have developed relatively well, with more tubers and higher quality than last year.
Currently, the harvest atmosphere in the fields of localities with large peanut production areas such as Khanh Hai, Khanh Ninh town, Khanh Loi... is very urgent and bustling. Some people are pulling peanuts, some are pounding the tubers, some are busy packing and transporting them home to dry in time for the sun. The joy and excitement are clearly visible on the faces of the farmers, because of a high-quality peanut crop, a good harvest, and a good price.
Mr. Pham Viet Thi, Tan hamlet, Khanh Loi commune, Yen Khanh district, calculated: "Last year, traders bought at 23,000-26,000 VND/kg of dried peanuts. With this selling price, after deducting expenses, we made a profit of about 3 million VND/sao. This year, we predict that the price of peanuts will be as high as or higher than last year. Currently, some traders have come to pre-order at 24,000 VND, but many households have not sold. Growing peanuts is mainly for labor and profit, but with such income, it is also a great encouragement and joy for farmers."
Mr. Tran Ngoc Diep, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Khanh district, said: Yen Khanh district has a tradition of growing peanuts for many years. In the 2023 Winter-Spring crop, the total cultivated area of the district reached nearly 8,120 hectares, of which peanuts alone were 414.2 hectares, the largest crop after rice. With a guaranteed source of seeds, planting on schedule, care according to the instructions of the professional sector, and the support of the weather, the spring peanut yield of the whole district this year is expected to reach 36-37 quintals/ha, higher than last year.
Currently, the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is actively encouraging people to take advantage of the sunny weather to concentrate their manpower to harvest spring peanuts and free up land. After that, the areas will continue to be renovated by people to grow things like squash, potatoes, and various vegetables so that when the harvest season comes, there will be a variety of vegetables, tubers, and fruits to sell on the market...
