These three unique conditions were shared by Ms. Le Duy Loan - the first Asian American and the only woman elected to the position of Vice President of Engineering in the more than 90-year history of Texas Instruments (TI) Corporation - at the 2024 commencement ceremony of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

The female engineer said that many years ago, when she expressed her intention to retire from Texas Instruments, the corporation offered many attractive financial policies and job positions. But she shook her head and only exchanged three conditions. The first condition was that she would not write reports to her superiors like people of the same position had to do. The second condition was that she would often be absent from company meetings because she had to travel and participate in social activities. And the last condition was that, except in cases that affected the company's important stature, she should not be required to contact customers. Surprisingly, in just a short time, the TI corporation accepted the unprecedented conditions that Ms. Loan proposed. Ms. Loan said that reaching the peak of her career, having many inventions, and being honored is what everyone wants and what she has achieved in her career. But for her, that is not success. In addition to being a social person and a professional person, she is also a mother. For this Vietnamese woman, how to make her two children have a connection with their homeland Vietnam, how to make them know how to contribute to life, that is success. If she cannot do the above things, she has completely failed. And to do that, she cannot confine herself within the framework of work. 5 simple words are more valuable than 10 doctorates. From her own experience, Ms. Loan said that to be successful, one must have the factors of knowledge, ethics, culture and soft skills. A person with knowledge, talent, and virtue but without soft skills will find it very difficult to work in corporations, especially in the technical field.

Throughout her journey - coming to the US at the age of 12, graduating as valedictorian from Alief Hastings High School in Texas, graduating with honors in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, working at Texas Instruments Corporation - Ms. Le Duy Loan said that all soft skills revolve around the five words: humanity - courtesy - righteousness - wisdom - trust. "Don't forget humanity because of too much power. Don't forget courtesy because of too much status. Don't forget righteousness because of too much wealth. Don't forget wisdom because of too much confusion and especially don't forget trust. I want to tell you that even 10 doctorates cannot replace these five simple words," Ms. Le Duy Loan said. According to Ms. Le Duy Loan, students are people who have had more opportunities to study than many people in the world . And to be successful, first of all, you need to define success for yourself instead of letting family, friends or people around you limit your "success". Ms. Loan said that when she first came to the US, she went to school during the day, worked at night and had to take care of her younger sibling. However, the difference with many people is that she is very dreamy, dreaming ideal dreams, even unrealistic dreams... According to her, no matter what the dream is, two most important factors are intelligence and health. This person is concerned that nowadays young people are attracted to attractive video clips on TikTok, they have a desire to get many likes on social networks, they communicate with each other via phone without leaving their room. Instead of hugging a pillow at night, many children now hug their phones.
