The incense offering ceremony in memory of the famous Pham Than Duat on the occasion of the 139th anniversary of his death (November 29, 1885) and the awarding ceremony for the best historical science doctoral theses nationwide were held on the morning of November 29 at the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam (Hanoi).

At the ceremony organized by the Pham Than Duat Award Fund in collaboration with the Vietnam Historical Science Association, the organizing committee awarded the Pham Than Duat History Award to the 6 best doctoral theses in history of the 24th season.
Among them, the thesis "Postal Service in Tonkin from 1897 to 1929" by Dr. Truong Thi Hai, Vietnam Institute of History, was honored to receive First Prize.
Two Second Prizes were awarded to the Thesis “Minh Mang Dynasty Military System” by Dr. Hoang Luong, Institute of Military History and “Revolutionary leaflets in Vietnam from 1930 to 1945” by Dr. Truong Thi Phuong, Institute of History, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
There were 3 Third Prizes for the theses: "The Party's leadership in building the militia and self-defense force from 2001 to 2015" by Dr. Pham Thanh Tung (Academy of Politics, Ministry of National Defense ); "The process of developing information technology human resources in Vietnam from 1993 to 2020" by Dr. Bui Thi Bich Thuan (Trade Union University) and "Temple relics related to the Tran Dynasty in Dong Trieu (Quang Ninh)" by Dr. Kieu Dinh Son (Ha Long University).
The famous person Pham Than Duat (1825-1885) was a historian, a multi-faceted cultural figure, a patriot, and a person who contributed to launching the Can Vuong movement against the French colonialists in the late 19th century.
Pham Than Duat was from Yen Mo Thuong village, Yen Mac commune, Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh province. In 1850, after passing the bachelor's exam, he became an official with the position of Professor of Doan Hung prefecture and then worked as Tri Chau Tuan Giao. Under the reign of King Tu Duc, Pham Than Duat successively experienced tasks in various fields, from politics, economics, irrigation to diplomacy and national defense.
In 1885, the French invaded the capital of Hue. As a militant figure, he and Ton That Thuyet assisted King Ham Nghi in the Quang Tri mountain defense. Under King Ham Nghi's orders, he drafted the Can Vuong edict calling on scholars and people to rise up against the French. As the Imperial Envoy to the North to recruit Can Vuong patriots, he was captured by the French and imprisoned in Con Dao. On November 29, 1885, on the way from Con Dao to Tahiti Island, he died in exile, his grave was the ocean.
During his 35 years as an official, while taking on the tasks assigned by the royal court, he also composed and completed many valuable works in the genres of poetry, diaries, memorials and geographical records such as Hung Hoa Ky Luoc, Quan Thanh Van Tap, Van Su Thien Tan Nhat Ky, Quan Thanh Memorial Tap, Ha De Memorial Tap, Ha De Bo Van Tap, Ha De Tau Tu Tap, Dieu Tran De Chinh Tri Nghi Tap.
As a talented historian, he once held the position of Deputy Director of the National History Institute of the Nguyen Dynasty. He was personally assigned by King Tu Duc to review the national history book Kham dinh Viet Su thong giam cuong muc, the official history book of the Nguyen Dynasty, and was in charge of editing the section on the main record of the Emperor Duc Tong Anh in the Dai Nam Thuc Luc De Tu Ky.
Since 2000, with the sponsorship of the Pham Than Duat Award Fund, the historical award named after the famous person has become the first award given in the field of history in Vietnam. This is also the official and only award of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, with a nationwide scope. In the past 23 seasons, 125 outstanding history doctors nationwide have received this historical award.
