During the inauguration ceremony held solemnly at Zocalo Square, Mexico City, the female President emphasized her commitment to strengthening women's rights, while affirming that Latin America's No. 2 economy continues to be a safe destination for international investors.

Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to usher in a new era of feminism in Mexico. "It's time for change, it's time for women. I am a mother, a grandmother, a scientist and a woman of faith. From today, by the will of the Mexican people, I am President," she said emotionally in her inaugural speech.

Sheinbaum, 62, is an environmental scientist who worked at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Before running for office, Sheinbaum served as mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023.

Ms Sheinbaum takes office at a time of political upheaval around the world, as well as in Mexico, where she will face persistent problems of violence and migration as well as the huge expectations left by her predecessor, Mr Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In her speech, President Sheinbaum affirmed that during her six-year term, she will focus on social security policies, poverty reduction and economic stability, including controlling gasoline and food prices, expanding support programs for women and children, supporting business investment, building housing and the railway system.

Ms. Sheinbaum also used her first speech as head of state to address investor concerns. She endorsed a sweeping judicial reform pushed by her predecessor. She said the central bank would operate independently. “Rest assured that the investments of domestic and foreign shareholders will be safe in our country,” she assured investors.

Regarding efforts to prevent and repel the activities of drug gangs that are currently controlling many areas in Mexico, the new President affirmed that he will not allow irresponsibility in this fierce fight, and affirmed that he will step up intelligence and investigation activities to improve the effectiveness of crime suppression.

In addition, the migrant crisis is also a prominent issue. International observers expect that with her courage and extensive experience in politics, Ms. Sheinbaum will bring new legacies to Mexico, solving the difficult problems that are still negatively affecting this country.

Previously, according to the official vote count results announced by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on June 6, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum won overwhelmingly over the two remaining candidates with 59.7% of the votes in the general election on June 2.

Also according to INE, with a gap of 32.3% compared to her closest rival, candidate Xochitl Galvez, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum also became the President-elect receiving the most votes in Mexican history.

The 2024 general election is the largest electoral event in Mexican history, attracting nearly 100 million voters at home and abroad to cast their ballots at more than 170,000 ballot boxes across all 32 states./.
