Second female President in Iceland's history

On August 1, Ms. Halla Tomasdottir was inaugurated as President of Iceland after winning the election 2 months ago.

In her inaugural address to Parliament, Ms Tomasdottir highlighted Iceland's achievements ineducation , health and prosperity over the past 80 years, while also highlighting the need for dialogue, cooperation and inclusion, especially the involvement of young people.

According to Ms. Tomasdottir, Iceland needs to focus on mental and social health issues, and needs to foster trust, solidarity and unity to overcome current global challenges.

In the presidential election in Iceland on June 1, Ms. Tomasdottir defeated two female rivals, former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir and environmental expert Halla Hrund Logadottir, to win to succeed President Gudni Th. Johannesson.

In Iceland, the presidency is largely ceremonial but has the power to veto bills or call referendums. Ms. Tomasdottir is the second female president in the country's history. In 1980, Iceland had its first female president, Ms. Vigdis Finbogadottir.
