Sturgeon farm of Mr. Ho Thanh Phuong (Hong Kim, A Luoi) |
Lots of potential
According to research results from the Aquaculture Research Institute I, domesticated Siberian sturgeon in Vietnam can live in high temperature conditions. Therefore, it is possible to raise commercial sturgeon in water bodies and cool water sources that do not exceed 300C. In Hue City, sturgeon was first introduced for trial farming by the Center for Aquaculture in A Luoi district in 2019 - 2020. After two years of implementing the model, it was shown that this fish breed grows and develops well, adapting to the climate and water source conditions of A Luoi area.
TTKN continues to survey some waterfalls and streams with year-round water temperatures below 26 degrees Celsius in other localities such as Phu Loc and Phong Dien to expand the model. However, for this model to develop sustainably, a project is needed to assess the development potential and perfect the technical incubation process.
Therefore, in 2023, the Center for Science and Technology will implement the project "Application of science and technology to build a model of sturgeon incubation and farming according to the value chain in mountainous communes of Hue City", with the goal of successfully applying scientific and technological advances in developing sturgeon incubation and farming suitable to natural conditions according to the value chain and contributing to increasing income for the community in mountainous communes of Hue City. The project is implemented with 2 locations in A Luoi district and 1 location in Nam Dong district (now Phu Loc district) with a incubation scale of 150m2/3 locations and a farming scale of 1,500m2/3 locations.
After more than 3 months of implementing the sturgeon hatchery model, the survival rate of the fish reached 63.3%, the average weight was 53.6g/fish, and the number of seeds collected was 19,000. The survival rate of fish in Mr. Ho Thanh Phuong's household (Hong Kim commune, A Luoi) and Huong Nguyen Border Post both reached 70%, meeting the requirements of the project. The hatchery model was also accepted for implementation results in April 2024. Currently, households are continuing to raise and care for the fish until the end of the commercial sturgeon farming model this May.
Mr. Ho Thanh Phuong said that his family released 10,000 sturgeon, the survival rate when hatching reached 70% and up to now each fish has reached 2kg. This is a new model, bringing quite high economic efficiency, at the same time creating jobs for local workers. To expand the farming scale, Mr. Phuong said that it is necessary to have a stable output market, at the same time, it is necessary to invest more in techniques, especially safe farming solutions during the rainy and stormy season.
Raising the "level" of sturgeon
Mr. Ho Van Minh, Vice Chairman of Hong Kim Commune People's Committee, said that the implementation of the sturgeon farming model of the Center for Sturgeon Breeding has opened up a new direction in local economic development and contributed to increasing income and creating jobs for people. Currently, Hong Kim Commune still has a lot of room to develop sturgeon farming, with a clean river and stream system, creating favorable conditions for people to breed and test-raise. At the same time, the local government will continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to open training courses on science and technology, creating conditions for people to access knowledge and techniques, thereby developing the model in the direction of the value chain, creating branded products.
Mr. Chau Ngoc Phi, Director of Hue City Aquaculture Research Center, affirmed that along with the implementation of the hatchery model, through the project, the Aquaculture Research Center has surveyed the natural conditions, needs, investment capacity for hatchery development, and the sturgeon consumption market to assess the capacity and orientation for hatchery development in the coming time. The Center has also received the sturgeon hatchery technical process and the commercial sturgeon farming technical process from the Coldwater Aquaculture Research Center - Aquaculture Research Institute 1. Currently, the Center is completing the hatchery and farming process, and at the same time, coordinating with the Coldwater Aquaculture Research Center to organize a training course for technicians on hatchery, farming, diagnosis, detection, prevention and treatment of fish diseases.
TTKN also organized training courses on sturgeon breeding techniques for farmers in communes of A Luoi and Phu Loc districts. Supported the construction of a traceability system for A Luoi sturgeon at Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong's household in Hong Kim commune. In addition, the project has built a traceability system according to the value chain for sturgeon products by providing QR-codes for products, helping consumers to check traceability information; supported label design and supported model implementation points in linking and consuming sturgeon products from the project. In addition, the project also supported additional types of machinery and equipment to monitor farming areas and measure environmental indicators...
According to Mr. Chau Ngoc Phi, during the implementation of the project, the Center for Science and Technology has focused on surveying breeds and coordinating with the transfer unit to provide materials from breeds, feed, especially the process of technology transfer, helping people easily grasp and proactively produce in the long term. In the coming time, the Center for Science and Technology will coordinate with the model implementation points to complete the remaining activities within the framework of the project to conduct acceptance and evaluate the results...
