"In 2009, when I returned to my hometown, I saw that my children's jobs were not stable while I was still healthy and had a passion for business, so I researched and tested many models. At first, I raised pheasants, pigeons and snakehead fish. These animals also brought income but the efficiency was not high," said Mr. Thuc.

Recalling his school days, living in the land of Hung Yen where there was a breed of Dong Tao chicken that was once only used by kings, he asked his acquaintances to find out. Seeing that no one in Ninh Binh was raising them, he boldly bought about 200 chickens to raise.

This year, 75 years old, Mr. Dinh Xuan Thuc is still very healthy, taking care of chickens is his daily joy.

"I never expected that from then on I would have a relationship with this type of chicken with legs as big as elephants. The first batch of chickens, then the next batches, were easy to raise. The chickens grew quickly and had no diseases. Each time, I sold 200-300 chickens. The price of this specialty chicken is many times higher than that of regular chickens, so the profit is big," the 75-year-old man shared.

Since 2012, when he had experience raising Dong Tao chickens, Mr. Thuc invested in barns to increase the number of chickens. From a scale of several hundred chickens, he expanded the farm to more than 3,000 chickens. In addition to the number of meat chickens maintained at 2,000 per litter, the flock of laying hens was maintained at nearly 1,500 for sale.

"Few people raise this type of chicken, so the market has a lot of potential. Traders buy all the batches we raise. Every year, my family sells 8-10 tons of chicken meat, with prices ranging from 95,000 VND to 120,000 VND/kg. We sell 4 batches of chicks each year, with a quantity of about 70,000 chicks," the chicken farm owner revealed.

Mr. Thuc is selling broiler chickens directly to traders at wholesale markets in Hanoi. Chicks are sold to large-scale farms in Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, Nam Dinh, etc. Mr. Thuc calculates that after deducting all expenses, his family earns about one billion VND in profit each year.

"Raising this type of chicken for the king is not difficult. To raise it well, disease prevention is the top priority. The barn also needs to be cleaned and lined with bio-mats before raising it. During the raising process, I regularly change the rice husks, clean the environment, and feed the chickens safe food so that the chickens grow quickly and soon reach the standard weight," Mr. Thuc shared.
