After starting 2023 in fourth place, Nvidia – the famous GPU maker – rose to become the world's largest semiconductor company in the third quarter by revenue and profit thanks to the "craze" of artificial intelligence .
Financial expert Dan Nystedt collected business results from Intel, Nvidia, Samsung Semiconductor, TSMC in all quarters since the beginning of 2021. The data shows that Nvidia beat them all and is the most "profitable" chip company.
The company's revenue in the third quarter alone reached $18.12 billion, an increase of 206% compared to the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, profit reached $10.42 billion, mostly from AI chips for data centers.
By comparison, TSMC – the world's largest contract chipmaker – posted a profit of $7.21 billion on revenue of $17.28 billion.
Also in the third quarter, Intel's revenue was $14.16 billion but lost $8 million. Samsung Semiconductor - Samsung's chip design and manufacturing division - recorded revenue of $12.52 billion and lost $2.86 billion.
Samsung is the world's largest maker of memory chips but has faced tough times as prices for the components have fallen and customers have become more cautious in recent years.
However, demand for memory chips is expected to recover in the coming quarters. Samsung has invested heavily to improve its foundry technology and expects to be able to produce chips for AMD and Qualcomm.
