Technology corporation Nvidia announced on September 22 that it will invest up to 100 billion USD in OpenAI company to build a new generation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center system.

According to a joint statement from the two tech companies, Nvidia will provide OpenAI with millions of GPU chips and data center infrastructure with a capacity of at least 10 gigawatts - equivalent to the electricity needs of more than 8 million US households.

The first systems are expected to be operational from the second half of 2026 on a new platform called Vera Rubin.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called it OpenAI's “largest AI infrastructure project in history.”

Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized: "Computing infrastructure will be the foundation for the future economy . We will leverage what we are building with Nvidia to create new AI breakthroughs and bring them to people and businesses on a global scale." He also affirmed that only Nvidia can deploy at such scale and speed.

According to US media, the deal involves two steps: Nvidia invests in OpenAI through non-voting shares, in return for OpenAI using the capital to buy Nvidia chips. Initially, Nvidia planned to invest $10 billion immediately after the chip purchase contract was finalized. OpenAI is currently valued at about $500 billion.

The deal raises competition concerns, as Nvidia becomes both the dominant GPU supplier for the AI industry and a stake in the world's leading AI company. Analysts warn of the risk of creating a monopoly, making it difficult for Nvidia's competitors (like AMD) or OpenAI's competitors (like Google, Anthropic, xAI) to scale.

“This deal could lock in Nvidia’s monopoly in the chip space with OpenAI’s software advantage, which would put competitors at a disadvantage,” said competition law expert Andre Barlow, adding that the Trump administration has been leaning toward loosening antitrust regulations to spur AI growth.

Immediately after the announcement, Nvidia shares rose 4.4% to a record high during the session, while shares of data center construction group Oracle - which is collaborating with OpenAI, Microsoft and SoftBank on the $500 billion Stargate mega-project, also rose 6%.

The move follows a series of major deals by Nvidia, including a $5 billion investment commitment to Intel last week to support the chipmaker's recovery efforts, as well as a $6.6 billion investment in OpenAI by 2024.

Since OpenAI launched the ChatGPT application in late 2022, the global AI race has exploded with hundreds of billions of dollars poured in by Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and billionaire Elon Musk's xAI. Nvidia, with GPUs originally designed for gaming, has now become an indispensable supplier in the AI field.

OpenAI now claims to have more than 700 million weekly active users, after launching ChatGPT-5 last month with many outstanding improvements./.
