The LEARN - INQUIRE - MASTER learning model (LIM Framework)
The LIM (LEARN - INQUIRE - MASTER) model, developed by the 9.0 IELTS teachers at The IELTS Workshop , aims to address current challenges in English learning, shifting the focus from knowledge transmission to the development of sustainable learning competencies for learners.
The stages of the model include:
- LEARN: Provides foundational knowledge of logical thinking, helping to understand the requirements and scoring criteria of the exam and the language mechanism.
- INQUIRE (Reflection): The process of analyzing, comparing, and contemplating in order to draw lessons, understand the causes of mistakes, and adjust study methods accordingly.
- MASTER: Applying knowledge to real-world situations to develop flexible problem-solving skills.
This model is built on scientific principles of language, psychology, and education , helping learners truly master English and develop solid language skills.
Many students at The IELTS Workshop have significantly improved their language skills after applying the LIM Framework. Truong Minh Truc, a student from Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, who achieved an 8.0 IELTS score thanks to the LIM Framework, shared: "As a student at TIW, I clearly feel that the teaching method here is very open and respects each individual's thinking. How to apply the LIM Framework to learning the four IELTS skills.
At The IELTS Workshop, the LIM model helps learners systematize their approach to each individual skill in the IELTS exam.
Speaking skills
- In the LEARN phase, students are guided to understand the scoring criteria and requirements of each section of the exam. Instead of memorizing sentence patterns, they learn how to express themselves accurately and naturally when speaking.
- The INQUIRE phase helps students practice speaking with the teacher to receive detailed feedback, then analyze sample answers and deduce patterns.
- At MASTER , students continue to practice speaking, improve based on feedback, and can handle a variety of topics confidently.
Writing Skills
- In the LEARN step, students understand the logic of different question types and how to analyze question requirements.
- The INQUIRE phase encourages analyzing sample essays, identifying common mistakes, and learning how to organize ideas coherently.
- By the time students reach the MASTER stage, they will be able to complete written assignments that meet the required standards, using accurate and persuasive language.
Listening Skills
Instead of simply listening and choosing answers, students are guided through active listening techniques.
- In the LEARN phase, you will learn how to identify question types and techniques for predicting answers.
- The INQUIRE phase helps analyze errors to understand why you didn't hear the information accurately.
- At MASTER , listening skills improve significantly, helping students keep up with the pace of listening exercises and apply techniques effectively.
Reading Skills
The LIM Framework supports reading comprehension through techniques such as skimming and scanning.
- The LEARN phase helps students understand the structure of the reading passage and the types of questions.
- INQUIRE encourages analyzing passages, identifying keywords, and practicing paraphrasing techniques.
- By the MASTER stage, students can answer questions accurately within the allotted time and apply their acquired language skills to speaking and writing.
