Specifically, Special Prosecutor Jack Smith announced a 45-page indictment, emphasizing that Mr. Trump committed four crimes, notably conspiring to defraud the United States by preventing Congress from recognizing President Joe Biden's victory and depriving voters of their right to a fair election.
The indictment states that the former US President and six others fraudulently scrutinized the electoral college lists in seven states, all of which Trump lost, so that the votes could be counted and officially certified in Congress on January 6.
At the same time, Mr. Smith placed full responsibility on Mr. Trump for the attack on Congress that day.
The former US President will be required to appear in Washington federal court on August 3 (local time).
For his part, Donald Trump's spokesman continued to deny the above indictment.
In related news, on August 1, The Hill (USA) cited the results of a public opinion poll by the New York Times and Siena College in Loudonville (New York) showing that 13% of Republicans believe that the 45th owner of the White House has committed a serious crime, more than double the level of 6% in September 2022.
The percentage of Republicans who are unsure whether Trump committed a serious crime also increased from 10% to 13%. However, the vast majority of Republicans (about 74%) still do not believe Donald Trump committed a serious crime.
