Young "teacher" with a change from making money to teaching

Huy is also the youngest lecturer to win a high prize at the 2025 City Vocational Education Teachers' Competition recently organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

Happiness in choosing the right career

After graduating from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education with a major in automotive engineering, Huy started working at the company. Shortly after, Huy realized that earning a lot of money did not make him as comfortable and happy as choosing the right career.

After more than 1 year of teaching, Huy feels this is the right choice and will stick with vocational education for a long time.

"When I was a student, I really enjoyed instructing my classmates and juniors. At those times, I felt like I had a lot of energy. Therefore, I think I have a destiny with teaching. My family was also very supportive when they heard I decided to change direction" - Huy confided.

Huy applied to Ho Chi Minh City Vocational College and took the civil service exam in May 2024. When he received the notice of admission, he was both happy and proud, but also had mixed feelings of anxiety.

"I was just a university graduate, without much experience. What I was most confident about at that time was my youth and determination, not being afraid of difficulties" - Mr. Huy confided.

If you don't pay attention to the color of the shirt, many people will probably mistake the teacher for a student.

Sharing the reason why he chose vocational education instead of working in university education, Huy said that each educational environment has its own strengths.

Vocational training is hard because 70% of the training program is practical, but in return, there is more time to be close to and bond with students. Most of the time is spent in factories, garages and on field trips at businesses.

"In the first days of teaching, I was a bit shy when addressing my students because the age gap between me and them was quite close. After that, I adjusted my thinking a bit. Instead of being a strict teacher, I became an older brother, guiding the younger students into the profession. Students were therefore bold in sharing their wishes, making learning easier" - the young teacher said with a smile.

Learn from competitions

More than a year of attachment to the vocational school is a very meaningful and eventful time for the young teacher. With the dedicated support of the school leaders and colleagues, the young lecturer has the opportunity to participate and rub shoulders in many roles at vocational competitions.

Notably, at the Vocational Education Teachers' Conference recently organized by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, Huy won second prize - an impressive achievement that not everyone can achieve in their first time participating. After the competition, Huy plans to focus on improving his professional qualifications, especially in the field of electric vehicle technology.

"The teaching profession must always go hand in hand with research and development of new technology to avoid being left behind. I will bring back the new knowledge I learn to share with my students. That is what I hope to achieve in the future" - Huy affirmed.

After Ho Chi Minh City merged its administrative boundaries, the teaching contest attracted a large number of participants with 151 teachers from 49 vocational training institutions registering to participate.

The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City awarded 4 first prizes, 12 second prizes, 20 third prizes, and 40 consolation prizes. In addition, 69 teachers were awarded the title of excellent teachers.

For the collective award, the organizing committee awarded certificates of merit to 9 units with the most outstanding achievements. In which, Ho Chi Minh City Vocational College led the whole group with the achievement of 1 first prize, 4 second prizes, 1 third prize and 1 consolation prize.
