According to the Khmer Times newspaper, Mr. Hun Sen made the above statement at the inauguration ceremony of a Ring Road 3 in Cambodia this morning (August 3).
“I want to warn you that if my son is in danger of dying, there is a high possibility that I will return as prime minister. If Hun Manet is in danger of dying, I will have to return as prime minister for a while, then I will decide who can take over this position,” Mr. Hun Sen emphasized.
The Cambodian leader further explained that this would help prevent the country from falling into chaos and ensure the happiness and peace of the people. Mr. Hun Sen also revealed that he had informed the Standing Committee of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) about the decision in December 2021.
After the CPP won a landslide victory in the general election on July 23, Mr. Hun Sen announced on July 26 that he would resign as prime minister and his successor would be his eldest son - General Hun Manet, Deputy Commander of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army.
After leaving the prime minister's seat, Mr. Hun Sen, 70 years old, is expected to become President of the Senate and Chairman of the Royal Council of Cambodia, a nine-member body responsible for selecting the king.
