According to KCNA on October 4, during a visit to a special operations force unit on October 2, Mr. Kim Jong Un said his military "will not hesitate to use all the offensive forces at its disposal, including nuclear weapons," if South Korea attempts to use armed force to infringe upon North Korea's sovereignty .

Kim's statement followed a speech by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Armed Forces Day on October 1, in which Yoon said the day North Korea tried to use nuclear weapons would be the end of Kim's regime because North Korea would face a "resolute and overwhelming response" from the US-South Korea alliance.
Such exchanges of words between South and North Korea are nothing new, but the latest comments come amid heightened tensions over North Korea's recent disclosure of a nuclear facility and continued missile testing.
In July, South Korea and the United States signed defense guidelines on integrating South Korea's conventional capabilities with U.S. nuclear forces. South Korea does not have nuclear weapons.
Hostilities between North Korea and South Korea are at their worst in years, with North Korean missile tests and increased US-South Korean military exercises. All communication channels and exchange programs between the two countries have remained stalled since 2019, when a US-North Korea diplomatic push to end the North's nuclear program collapsed.
