Mr. Medvedev warned that the more destructive Western weapons aid to Ukraine are, the greater the risk of a nuclear apocalypse.
“The more weapons they supply, the more dangerous the world becomes,” Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said on May 23. “And the more destructive these weapons are, the more likely the so-called nuclear apocalypse scenario becomes.”
Mr Medvedev accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of not taking the risk of nuclear war seriously and of making a big mistake.
"It seems they think that a nuclear conflict, or a nuclear apocalypse, can never happen," Mr Medvedev said. NATO "is wrong and at some point events can change completely unexpectedly."
"The North Atlantic Alliance will have to bear full responsibility," he said, adding that no one knew whether the point of no return had been crossed.
Russia has repeatedly accused the West of engaging in a proxy war with Moscow in Ukraine, warning that the situation could escalate into a larger conflict. The West supports Ukraine in its fight against Russia but stresses that it does not want a direct military confrontation between NATO and Russia.

Mr Medvedev has frequently made tough statements aimed at the US and its European allies. He has also repeatedly stated that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if necessary.
Mr Medvedev said on May 12 that "Russia's enemies are really pushing the world to the brink of World War III and a global catastrophe, in which no side can win." Earlier this year, he accused the US and its allies of almost igniting World War III by preparing to attack Russia, forcing the country to act.
The West has provided Ukraine with a large amount of weapons, ammunition and military equipment to counter Russia's campaign. The United States is leading the effort, with a total aid value of about 37 billion USD. Ukraine is said to be preparing to launch a large-scale counterattack, but some Western experts assess that with current resources, Kiev will find it difficult to win a decisive victory and change the situation on the battlefield.
