Trump denies rumors of choosing Nikki Haley as his deputy

"Nikki Haley is not in my consideration for vice president, but I hope she is okay," former President Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on May 11.

Just before that, Axios quoted a source saying that Mr. Trump could choose Ms. Haley if he was convinced that the former US ambassador to the United Nations could help him win re-election, avoid the risk of being sentenced to prison in prosecution cases and cover tens of millions of dollars in legal costs if he lost.

Mr Trump has won enough votes to become the Republican Party's nominee for the November election. Ms Haley worked in Mr Trump's administration but was also a fierce competitor in the Republican primary election.

Her campaign ended in March. Although she acknowledged that Mr. Trump would be the party's nominee, Ms. Haley has not yet publicly endorsed the former leader.

If Ms. Haley continues to withhold support and Mr. Trump loses in November, the large number of Republicans who support her could turn to criticize, threatening the former ambassador's ability to run for re-election later.

Republicans close to the Trump and Haley campaigns say both sides would benefit from reconciliation, despite fierce primaries and differences on some major issues. The former ambassador has not yet commented.

According to Reuters, in addition to Nikki Haley, there are many other names that Mr. Trump could choose as his running mate, such as Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota, Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota, Senators Marco Rubio, Tim Scott and JD Vance, and Representative Elise Stefanik. Mr. Burgum and Mr. Scott participated in the 2024 primary election before dropping out. Ms. Noem is embroiled in controversy when she revealed that she once shot a dog for disobeying.

Mr Trump will be formally nominated by the Republican Party at the convention in Wisconsin in July. He will face President Joe Biden in the election on November 5.
