“We will strike a large number of targets in the coming hours. In the coming days, we will expose how Iran finances Hezbollah’s terrorist activities, using civilian financial institutions and NGOs as a cover for their activities. We will strike these organizations at night and we will provide timely updates on the results in the coming days.”
That was the statement of Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari, before attacking the financial holding organization of Hezbollah, called Al-Qard Al-Hassan, which roughly translates to “good loan” in Arabic. The Israeli military also issued warnings to people in a series of areas in Lebanon to evacuate.
On the night of October 20, Israeli airstrikes caused a series of large explosions that rocked areas near the airport in Lebanon’s capital Beirut. Hundreds of residents in the area were forced to flee their homes overnight. At least three branches of Al-Qard Al-Hassan were attacked – despite the organization’s mission of providing financial assistance to poor families in Lebanon.
Responding to Israel's move, Al-Qard Al-Hassan said that Israel was showing its stalemate in the conflict in Lebanon; affirming that it had taken measures to ensure the safety of the organization's assets.
Also on October 20, Israel attacked more than 100 targets in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese army said that government troops were also killed in the Israeli airstrikes. The United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon also accused Israel of deliberately destroying an observation post and a fence surrounding a base of its forces. The mission reiterated its opposition to Israel's request for the evacuation of the UN forces.
In response to Israel's escalation, Hezbollah yesterday also launched more than 170 rockets into many areas of Israel, injuring at least 3 people in the city of Safed.
The moves come a day after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said civilian casualties in Lebanon were “too high” and called on Israel to reduce some of its attacks, particularly in and around the capital Beirut.
In a related development, yesterday (October 20), Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump said he had a “very good” phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, revealing that Israel is considering US advice on retaliating against Iran, but stressed that the attack would be based on Israel’s national interests. In response to the Israeli Prime Minister, Donald Trump said, “Do what Israel has to do.”
