In an interview with Fox News on March 17, former President Trump called for an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the first time since Hamas attacked Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
"You have to end it and do it quickly, bring peace back to the world . We need peace in the world. We need peace in the Middle East," Mr. Trump replied in the interview when asked what he would say to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the conflict.

Two days earlier, Mr Trump had called Hamas “a problem” and Israel should end it. The former leader, who has enough votes to become the Republican presidential nominee, said last year’s attack in Israel was “terrible” and “would never happen if I were president”.
From the early days of the conflict, the former president criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu for failing to prevent Hamas attacks. Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with Netanyahu for not helping Washington in the airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in early 2020, when Trump was president. Despite his support for Israel, Trump has avoided publicly backing Netanyahu in recent months, according to Axios .

In the latest interview, Mr. Trump also said that the leader of the Democratic Party in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, criticized Israel for domestic political motives. Mr. Schumer had previously called Mr. Netanyahu an obstacle to peace between Israel and Palestine.
"He looked at where I got more votes and I guess he saw that, the Palestinians and he saw the big marches, and he said 'I'd rather go that way than Israel'," Mr Trump said, accusing Mr Schumer of "abandoning Israel".
